I quit a couple months ago and I'm glad I did. Withdrawls are a pain in the ass, and I wouldn't necessarily want to go through poverty and nick fits at the same time.

Congrats Ayoob. I smoked for 21 years and have now been a non-smoker for a whole 3 years. I wouldn't go back to it if someone said do or die. Addictions are going to be a tough haul when TSHTF whether its smoking, latees, or heroine. Not pretty stuff.

missed one option. i smoke tobacco occasionally, am not physically addicted, and can go long periods (weeks, months) without smoking, without losing my mind or experiencing undue discomfort. it's just a vice i happen to enjoy. it's nice to take the edge off life with sometimes too, but not by any means something i need.

with all that said - yes sometimes i have very mild cravings. when i do, i tend to avoid use until they go away completely. i know if i keep my tobacco use within certain limits i am compulsion free and plan to stay that way.

now coffee... that's going to be a bitch.
what, me worry?

I'm with you on that one
One thing that struck my mind, was how anti-smoking laws have been introduced here in Norway(and elsewhere). It is now illegal to smoke in bars and restaurants. Before they introduced this, I was, like a lot of people very much against it, thinking that it was an attack on people's personal freedom. However, the law has been introduced without too many problems, and it seems like it's led a lot of people to quit smoking. It's also nice to be able to go out without coming home with clothes stinking of smoke.
The reason I bring this up is in relation to gasoline consumption in the US. Now, people are going nuts over $2 prices at the pumps, but if things got serious enough, is it inconceivable that the American public would actually realize that it is in their own interest to reduce their excessive consumption? I think how this plays out will have an immense impact on the whole PO situation...

Used to do camel no filters because I'm the ultimate badass. Quit because a gf wanted me to.

I usually just smoke cigars every once in a while.

I smoke a pipe, and nothing else. It's one of life's great pleasures, right up there with chocolate, with a unique combination of sensual and contemplative elements. (No, I do not like "chocolate-flavored tobacco" or even tobacco-flavored chocolate!:-)

A pipe is one of those artifacts that is almost the antithesis of postmodernism; a simple shape in carved wood with a vulcanite stem, that lasts a lifetime and carries a lifetime of memories with it.

If you wonder why anyone would bother to take up a practice that is so out of step with the times, go into a decent tobacconist's shop and stick your nose in the various jars of pipe tobacco. Some might strike you as too spicy, or too sweet, but some will strike a chord that has a unique kind of resonance, much the same way as coffee drinkers feel when they stick their nose in a bag of their favorite freshly-ground beans.

I expect to have a decent amount of my preferred blends stashed away, and also have the means to grow some for personal consumption and trade. I don't expect to be able to get the homegrown to taste like what I smoke now, but in time I should be able to come up with something satisfactory.

I find cigarettes are stinky and I resent the major cigarette companies for having essentially turned tobacco into an "issue" to the extent that the backlash now threatens individual choice in the matter.

The poll question for this topic would have gotten more interesting data if it had been worded like this:

"Do you smoke? a) cigarettes, b) cigars, c) pipe, d) hookah, e) other, f) don't smoke and don't care either way, g) don't smoke and find it objectionable to be around."

Totally agree :)
I do have a resonably well stocked humidor with cigars as well :)

Just last weekend spring really started to get it's grip over here, was warm on the balcony, the sun shone from a clear blue sky. Ohh the joy of sitting in the sun relaxing with the favurite pipe and a good book.

... about a pack a week, including what I give out, since I quit drinkin' 23 years ago this month.

Ok, here's a question:

How does one go about planting a tobacco plant/bush/whatever it's called. I live in a very sunny area and I think it might be nice to have tobacco when things in general go haywire. And maybe some tips on coffee tree (bush?) growing while you're at it. Hate to go 100% without those two basic needs.

Thanks,

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')ow does one go about planting a tobacco plant/bush/whatever it's called.

I read a Swedish website a while ago with tips for growing tobacco, they also sold starter-packs with 3 different types of tobacco and some different flavourings.
I'm sure there must be something similar in the states :)

Tobacco was introduced into California by the Spanish Missionaries and now grows wild. I can't say for sure if it grows wild up San Fran way but its a bush with blue-green large elliptical shaped leaves and has long yellow tube shape flowers.

I average half a pack per century. :)
Well , I confess I don't smoke since the first and last puff 15 years ago. I don't drink either. I manage to brainwash myself to quit drinking.

(Something like bad bad corporation is putting cancer causing chemicals in all processed drinks. Pig oil in Cola . Petroleum paint in colorful soft drinks. Pain killer in beer. I paste it to the wall ,to the toilet door and say it for 30 minutes before sleep. Before long I believe my own lies and quit drinking. That is almost 5 years ago. Greenies must not support bad bad corporation)

That's what I call positive propaganda. 8O
It is still a lie but I still believe my own lie until now. No wonder those who watch TV are $#@$#.

smoke about a pack a day, a gram of weed of day, normally pop a pill on weekends too obviously followed by more than a few cones the next day. Might as well enjoy some of the benefits of pre peak oil society while it lasts.

Agren: aha, another fellow pipe smoker here! Interesting.

Woodies: Mind if I ask what kind of pill, and what "cones" are...?

If you're smoking a gram of weed a day for entertainment, chances are there's so much in your body right now that it won't be as effective if you need it for medical purposes.

When the crunch hits, pharmaceuticals may be expensive or hard to get, and we may have to count even more on herbals and nutritionals, including cannabis. I'd suggest cutting back quite a bit so your body can clean itself out, just in case.

Also too much recreational pot-smoking can cause depression, which then leads to more pot to try to feel better, which keeps the depression going. Cannabis is highly effective in calming down the manic phase of bipolar disorder, and it's one of the few medications that will do that without making the person feel like they've been lobotomized. But too much of any anti-manic drug can cause depression, just as taking antidepressants can cause a person with bipolar disorder to flip into the manic phase.

So if you're feeling like crap about life, there's a good chance the weed is causing it. Another good reason to cut way back on recreational use.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BabyPeanut', 'w')ell?

Smoke a pack of cigarettes a week. 2-3 cigs a day. That's my ration.
Smoke weed 2-3 times a week, if possible. First smoke of the day
with a cup of coffee is the best. I also like to smoke a cig after
I smoke a bowl of weed.

I figure the smoking probably doesn't amount to much considering all
the exhaust fumes I suck down commuting by bike.

Cuban cigars are my vice but I only smoke about 20 a year. If I'm absolutely pissed drunk then I might have the odd cigarette (less than 10 a year) and all probably together.
