I don't think this has much of a cause from peak oil. The meth problem may have more to do with it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Roy', 'H')ell that is already happening around here. In the last 6 months I've seen most of the 'yard ornaments' disappearing in the area. One old Ford pickup I had my eye on as parts vehicle for my truck... gone.

Junked cars, water heaters, washing machines, refrigerators, etc.

While drinking a beer with two neighbors the other evening, they were commenting on which scrap outfit was paying better, offering that one of the scrap places was ripping people off left and right.

Not really being in the scavenging business (yet-- knock on wood) I thought that was interesting and made a note to bring any of my future scavengings to dealer # 2.

No doubt - I've been noticing the same scenario; junk cars have by and large disappeared from site. I can't say I miss them, but you do end up seeing some real restorable gems going down the street on the back of flatbeds. I saw an early 60's Falcon going to the crusher a couple of months ago.
After fueling up their cars, Twyman says they bowed their heads and asked God for cheaper gas.There was no immediate answer, but he says other motorists joined in and the service station owner didn't run them off.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('letitburn84', '
')I wonder what the scrap guys are thinking when some disheveled crank addict walks in with a half ton of metal bearing the stamp "Town of XXXXXXXX" on it and they hand over some cash anyway?

I'd say they're thinking, profit??

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')olice say a group of people had a very thorough plan to get all 120 feet of steel and copper down from the old Windber radio tower.

And that is how it is done.

No, its an example of cunning an ingenuity.

I would love to be part of a crew that could disappear a whole radio tower or Bridge, or giant Iconic statue.

Two more ugly anecdotes:

Our neighbor replaces windows for a living. His yard is always full of window frames, screens, and scrap.

One day, someone drove up in broad daylight and took it all.

Second, I recently had my car worked on. It's an old (1991) VW Fox. Our mechanic was telling us how it's getting harder and harder to work on the older cars because the junk cars are being sold for scrap so fast.

Junkyards as parts repositories will become things of the past. All will be compacted and recycled.
