$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('HeckuvaJob', 'I')'ve just started reading Mike Ruppert's Crossing the Rubicon. I'm also eager to find out what the deal is with another of my favorite authors, Greg Palast. Sorry for using his name if he is, in fact, your Voldemort.
The Rubicon is a tough read, like going down the rabbit hole and I couldn't finish it. I don't believe WT7 (or 1 and 2) fell on their own accord. The entire episode and subsequent invasion of Iraq are surely connected but I don't believe we will ever know how. We know why, peak oil and who, the oil boys. But we won't ever know how they did it all.

Palast is wrong on oil. I tried to read his book. It made no sense.

Welcome!

I read crossing the rub while in prison...tough, but good read.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('HeckuvaJob', 'I') actually used my first post to critique the media recommendations of one of your Generals. Kind of funny, huh? Huh? Yeah?...

My passion is censorship, specifically "the subtle yet constant and sophisticated manipulation of reality in our mass media outlets". Corporate news in the US is toxic. My greatest concern is net neutrality. I truly believe that quote by one of our founders that if you give the American people the facts, they're capable of deciding the best course for the country.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')aving said that, I'm also willing to concede that (at this stage of the game) fighting for a free press is like complaining about how small your cabin is on the Titanic.

My 7 year odyssey has led me here, so I'm just now learning about peak oil. In fact, I'm one of the idiots who voted for the windfall profit tax on your poll. I want you to tell me why I'm an idiot (but not all at once).

Welcome, Heck. Greg Palast gets cited here on a frequent basis. Media and censorship is worth getting fumed about and your metaphor up there is a quotable quote.

Big Tex a general? Don't go giving him a bigger head than he already has. :)

You sound like an intelligent sort; I look forward to your contributions.

My 7 year odyssey has led me here,

Tell us more about it (better 7 years than Seven Days)...

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I see we have quite a crew here!

Albente - by 7 year odyssey, I mean stumbling around in the dark, occasionally kicking into the truth. Certain events just didn't sit well with me, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

What I didn't realize at the time was that Democrats and Republicans are different factions of the same gang, America holds the rest of the world to a double standard, and that Dan Rather was lying to me.

Never would I've guessed that our government's main loyalty is to the corporations that help get them elected. They throw the Americans just enough loaves to keep us from rioting. A few milestones on my journey:

college - early 1990s. Clinton and Gore campaign in Pittsburgh, promising to block the construction of WTI (Waste Technologies Inc). A few years later, construction begins on the world's largest toxic waste incinerator, 38 miles upwind from my house.

1998. Military pilots stationed in Italy were hot-dogging in the mountains when they clipped a cable car and sent 20 people to their death. The soldiers were exonerated. Clinton promised the families money, Congress blocked it. Why do we have soldiers in Italy? What about the families?

November 2000. I went to bed when Al Gore was elected president and woke up under the Bush administration. Why is the Supreme Court blocking the recount? Why isn't Gore fighting back?

October 2001. I'm watching CNN as large steel beams, dripping with molten metal, are removed from the pile. How is this possible? The attack was over a month ago!

March 2003. Iraq? I thought we were in Afghanistan.

November 2004. You have GOT to be kidding me.

August 2005. Why isn't anyone helping these people? "You're doing a HECKUVA JOB, BROWNIE!"

January 2006
Nancy Pelosi won! Now the Democrats will impeach Bush and get us the hell out of Iraq!

I would like to thank the following individuals for bitch-slapping me back to reality and revealing the Matrix: Michael Moore, Chalmers Johnson, Amory Lovins, Arundhati Roy, Ron Paul, Noam Chomsky, Ray McGovern, Rajiv Chandrasekaran, Gore Vidal, David Ray Griffin, Michael Pollan, Amy Goodman, Aaron Russo, Paul Rieckhoff, Mike Gravel, Jeffery Sachs, Denis Kucinich, Robert Greenwald, Michael Eric Dyson

Hi all! I'm Juha from Finland.

I became PO aware in 2003. (I think) it happened by installing StumbleUpon on my browser and then stumbling upon a site that listed different apocalypse scenarios (http://www.exitmundi.nl/).
As you can guess, one of those scenarios actually seemed quite scary, and I started looking for more information on the subject..

The next stop then was LATOC, which changed everything for me on the first reading. In the later days, these forums have been a valuable source of information. I want to thank everybody for keeping up the sober conversation. I've learnt a lot!

Welcome s0ul5. Glad you've "stumbled upon" this knowledge. Make sure to check out the Planning for the Future forum, lots of great personal and community mitigation strategies there!

Hello from Toronto

Hello friends! I am a construction project manager from Toronto, very interested in alternative energy options. I am possibly wanting to switch industries to AE in a near future. I thought this would be an ideal forum to learn more about the industry/technologies. I understand there are also other sister forums in that field, of course.

Well then, looking forward to partake in many intelligent discussions =)

Yet another Chicagoan...

Unread postby MsMarieH » Tue 12 Aug 2008, 15:22:48

Greetings! Yet another visitor from Chicago (far western suburbs). I found out about this site back around May and have spent the last several weeks or so reading through the Planning for the Future Thread (yup, all 50+ freaking pages of gazillion page posts). Great resource and I appreciate everyone sharing their knowledge. I also really appreciate reading all the spirited debates (even when they are mean-spirited, they are still interesting).

I will most likely be part of the die off, cause we are sure in no position to do much solid preparation… However, that doesn’t mean we are not making at least an effort anyway. We have pretty well stocked disaster kits for short term needs (couple weeks to a couple months). At any given time, we probably have enough food on hand to cover 3 months (maybe more if pushed).

I was a first aid/CPR instructor for many years, so I have that knowledge. I am also a gardener and can/dry/freeze my produce. I have a large herb garden and have a hobby interest in the culinary, medicinal, historical, craft, and other uses of herbs and plants. Being a gardener, I have also been interested in general green-ness, like rain barrels (which we are adding this fall), composting (have multiple bins), plant growing from seed, heirlooms, etc.

I have always had an interest in history and am a voracious reader with a pretty good sized set of various reference books that I think will come in handy (like Country Skills, field guides for edible and medicinal herbs and most other identification books, historical cooking books, do it yourself repair books, etc.). Hubby was a diesel maintenance mechanic in the navy and is now in IT (yes, I know how little future there is in IT – oh well…), so he can be pretty good tinkering with engines and fixing things (with duct tape and a paper clip, you can fix 90% of the world’s problems).

I am the youngest of ten and my parents were not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination (yes, we are directly responsible for some of the world’s overpopulation ills, but I can’t help being glad my mom didn’t stop at nine). They grew large gardens and I always helped my dad with them plus they were extremely frugal (had to be, not surprisingly). Hubby grew up in a rural area and can be pretty frugal when he wants to be (it’s just that he so seldom wants to be).

I don’t have the money to invest in a lot of large scale preparations, but I’m going to do what I can here and there to prepare. The beauty of these preps is that so many things are multipurpose (i.e. canning your own food isn’t just for disaster prep – it’s for having great food in the middle of winter and saving money).

Sorry, I’m not a 25 year old Asian chick named Kelly, but hopefully you’ll let me join your flock anyway. I’m willing to volunteer as a harem member if anyone wants a 40+ overweight slightly grey haired woman in the mix… LOL

I’ll be reading lots more posts and hope to participate in some of the conversations with a semi-intelligent perspective.

Welcome to the forums Marie! I am in the City, but travel around all the time for our Garden centers I help run. There are a few Chicagoans on this board, maybe one day we'll get something going concerning PeakOil again, but it's easier to talk about it on a forum, and DO the things like garden clubs, solar retrofits, etc. in groups.
There was some interest lately in starting something, but it was on a worknight, in a bar off of Rush/Division and I wonder if folks just want to party/socialize or do something more productive. I haven't got time on a worknight to go drinking.
I'd rather be in my garden!

I hear ya on the 40+ slightly graying hair thing though, lol.

Be well Marie,

Blu

Yay Chicago! Never actually lived there, but I am very familiar with it. My father was born and raised there and most of my relatives still reside there or mostly close by.

Chicago is not that bad off as far as cities go (they all have their individual bad points). It is still a relatively compact city by American standards. Driving from the Loop (NOT during rush hours!) you can be out in corn fields in what about 40 minutes of driving. Chicago is small in comparison to the sprawl of L.A., Phoenix, or Atlanta.

Within 50 miles of you is the start of some of the best farmland in the world that runs from Indiana through Iowa. Some of my relatives still farm this.

I currently live in California, which because of population pressures will be totally unsustainable without oil. One of the two locations I am currently considering as a fall back after I retire soon is within 80 miles of you.

Actually yes, I did. I used to be a worm on an oil rig, and one of the phrases used was about how the drill 'bites' into what ever it is going through. Drillbites is just kinda my way of making fun of the fact that we can not drill our way out of this situations. Kinda like saying "No matter how deep the drill bites, it will never be enough." See...

I figured there had to be an explanation.

I actually work as a petroleum landman. You are probably familiar with that but if not I am the guy who negotiates the oil and gas leases that are required before you all start drilling.

Its nice to have another industry person and I look forward to your insight.
