While we are on the topic of politicians, let's talk about John McCain for a minute.
Everybody knows the brief outline of the story; he was in the military, went to Nam, was held in the Hanoi Hilton, and got back in 1973. After his rehab, they shipped him to DC, where he became a senate liason, decided to get into politics, and then in 1982 ran for the house, and then later the US Senate, where he became one of the Keating Five, who was approached by the sleazebag S and L pirate to try to get the government to bail him out of some bad loans.
He got over that, more or less, got a reputation and was well respected as sort of a reformer, which he continued to be until 2004 when he decided to run for President.
Here are some fill-in details:
His first marriage was in 1965, and he and his wife Carol adopted a couple of kids. They shipped him off in 1967.
After Nam, and after Rehab, he was spending some time in Washington.
In 1979, he met up with Cindy Lou Hensley. Rich, attractive, apparently hornier than her public persona, and 18 years younger than he is. We all know what happened: they started bonking one another. In a year, he had ditched the old broad, and in 1980, they got married. Gary Hart (yes, THAT Gary Hart) was part of the wedding party.
Reportedly, Nancy Reagan was upset at the whole thing.
Cindy Lou's deep pockets enabled our man John to run for office, and we all know the rest of the story.
So many questions:
a. If John Edwards was a complete asshole for bonking this little photographer, why is John McCain not a complete asshole for bonking Cindy?
b. Does the fact that John Edwards did not ditch his family and run off with the photographer, while John McCain did ditch his family make any difference to your answer in (a)?
c. Is there an "expiration date" on being an asshole? Does the fact that McCain's affair happened so long ago make any difference?
d. Are there any other extenuating circumstances that would make it more acceptable for one of the assholes above to have an affair than the other?
e. Why is this such a big deal in the US, when in Europe, apparently it is pretty common for middle aged politicians to have affairs (shows that they have some testosterone left)?
f. Does the fact that Cindy is "rich" and the little photography babe is "not rich" make any difference to the argument?
g. If all of these people were poor white trash, would any of this be in the headlines? Is it somehow more or less acceptable for these politicians to be bonking around one another? If they were rock stars, or athletes, would we not think this is part of the job duties?
So many questions.....
