For the most part it's just pencil and paper, my artwork isn't that spectacular but people seem to like. The field that I'm getting into is Animation as opposed to traditional art, and Peak Oil has me thinking that with most of the animation being done on computers, it would be better for me to just work on the art as a freelance thing and focus more time and energy on setting up some kind of food production. Since it might be unlikely for computers to play much of a role that far down the production slope.

As to if art school is worth it? I dunno, it could lean either way depending upon your daughter's outlook on the Peak Oil issue. Is it worth it to get that far into debt not knowing what's going to happen in terms of job opportunities/locations in the coming years.

Hello from New Brunswick

Unread postby XLMike » Mon 04 Aug 2008, 07:39:40

Hello all.
I've been reading a lot of good posts here for a couple of months now. very informative. I thought it was high time that I introduce myself.

Obviously, my name is Mike, I'm 6'-5" and weigh 300lbs hence the XL. (It's mostly muscle, really it is!) For years now I've had a feeling that something in the world was not right but didn't know what it was. Then I got a job in Calgary working in the oil and gas industry. It took me a couple years to realize that that is what's wrong. I did an internet search for "tipping point oil" and that was that. Four months and a bit of stress later, I sold the house (for a considerable profit) quite a 75K job and moved the family to a small town in New Brunswick (right on the border with Maine)

After getting set up, I started researching oil again. When I came across "Life after the oil crash" I became very depressed and researched some more and thought a lot. I settled on "peakoil.com" as a good place to hang out because of the informed intellegent conversations taking place. I've started a small stockpile (about 2-3 months worth) and am excited about finishing renovating my house to sell in favor of getting an acreage. My ultimate plan is to be self sufficient, off grid, and ready to go.

Hello everyone, I am Christopher. I picked the name “Drill Bites” because I used to work on an oil rig just like on the T.V. show “Black Gold.” I was researching more information on peak oil when I found this site. I checked it out and a couple of weeks later I registered and now I am doing my first post. Anyway, you wanna know anything else, ya gotta ask. C ya.

Hello

Unread postby Shorty1861 » Tue 05 Aug 2008, 18:42:19

Hello everyone -

My name is Greg and after lurking around this site for the last couple of years I decided to actually register and join! I currently live in Fairfax, IA, just southwest of Cedar Rapids, the site of recent historical flooding.

I make my living as an electrical engineer, designing chips for cellphones. Woohoo!

As I have been lurking for a while, I have picked up a lot of info on Peak Oil. I believe in Peak Oil and the fact that mankind will have to go through a paradigm shift in the future to survive (If that is possible). There is still a lot of info I need to read and will do so.

Regards,

Greg

new but old

Unread postby abbeboeuf » Tue 05 Aug 2008, 21:23:57

Hello to everyone from the older generation, so old I posted myself as 66 instead of 65 in the "how old are you" poll about #of children. As an ageing but still practicing physician I remain fascinated by our inability to see our problems, accept any personal responsibilty for them or to consider even the smallest steps towards solutions. I can only comfort myself that I am likely to die before the worst of what is to come. I guess that will make me a doomer.

Yep. You're a doomer. And a realist.

Same thing.

We sure could use the expertise and wisdom of an old country doctor around here. (Of course, a city doctor will do just as well.)
