We hit an air pocket over the Rockies that dropped us 1000 vertical feet. The beverage cart hit the ceiling and people thought that this was the end. I was only 10 years old so I thought it was a blast.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', 'Z')ardoz, be nice!

Okay, okay.

I guess I get a bit cranky when I hear the constant bad-mouthing of air travel because we're all going to miss it so much when it's gone. Many people don't seem to realize what a gift it is.

Ever tried to drive coast-to-coast across North America? And then back again? Now that is a true nightmare. What a monumental waste of time and resources.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', 'Z')ardoz, be nice! Those are just expressions.

Plane trips are remarkably safe, but they can leave psychic scars, esp. these days.

I'll never forget a landing I once made in New Orleans. There was a terrible thunderstorm, and the plane kept circling and bucking like a bronco. It was night. I thought I was a goner.

Oh gosh, I've been on a flight like that before. I was coming back from New York to Ft. Lauderdale (at nighttime as well) and we got boxed in by thunderstorms just off the east coast of Florida. For 40 long minutes, it was like being on a wild-ass bronco ride, with lightening flashing all around, etc. And I knew the plane only had so much reserve fuel to burn...

Also, I couldn't move my right arm for most of that time, as the poor guy next to me was holding on with a vice grip...and he was not letting go...LOL. Never in my life had I seen someone be so utterly, mortally terrified. As far as I went, let's just say that I have a whole lot of faith in the ability of airline pilots to get me there safely. :)

But the point of this thread is, we have stopped flying even though it is not gone.

Gosh, yes, I have done this. We made the trip in a '76 Dodge Colt, so it was gas-efficient compared to almost all other vehicles. But it meant a week of driving each way, and of course it was in the summertime, no air conditioning in the car...we were constantly shifting around in our seats to allow air to circulate around us. We did see the country, though. Half of the trip was through Canada and the other half through the US. All things considered, I wouldn't drive it again!

I and three others drove from California to Chicago and back again in one weekend (it was my graduation and none of us had money for air fare). That wasn't something I'll do again. 8O

But I do have fond memories of going on road trips to Chicago at a more leisurely pace several times. It reminds me a lot of backpacking: go as far as you like, stay where you like, eat when you like, see sights that no one flying will get to. :)

I have to agree with you there, RedStateGreen. Hubby and I have taken quite a few long road trips, especially before we had our kids. I remember taking a road off the beaten track in northern California and, to our delight, we spent an hour or so watching a couple hundred sea lions resting on rocks just meters off the coast, barking and diving in the water. In New Hampshire one beautiful night, we wandered into the "downtown" area of a small town and joined in an outdoor concert; though it was 25 years ago, the memory of that evening is fresh in my mind.

Still, I get Zardoz's point, it is very quick and convenient to fly, and if we ever needed to get somewhere really fast, we would want to fly.
