The End Is Nigh
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he End Is Nigh: Peak Oil Proponent Forecasts Grim Future

"I think it's an awful story, and I hate to be the one to tell it." So says Chris Nelder, an editor at EnergyandCapital.com and co-author of "Profit from the Peak," who maintains that peak oil -- the concept that global oil production will soon decline sharply -- is fact, not theory.
Regardless of which camp you fall into on the debate over peak oil, the effects of diminished oil supplies Nelder describes in the accompanying video are hair-raising:
The end of the suburbs as we know them.
A boom in coal production and use, resulting in continued carbon emissions.
Global fuel and food riots.
Still, every cloud has its silver lining, and Nelder notes that a resurgence in local farming and intensified development of renewable energy sources are inevitable. And while sweeping changes in world energy use may be a long way off, Nelder has some tips on alternative energy stocks you can use today.

You know, just when I start to feel sorry for these donkey sh-t eaters, they go ahead and post all sorts of crap about "Doomers" and "chicken littles" and mock the interviewee, who was nothing if not reasonable.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ow reports are coming in that there is roughly 250 BILLION barrels of oil in North America alone.

Does anyone know anything about these "reports" and please do not say it's oil shale or sand!

Nice picture Cashmere. Luv it!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')oes anyone know anything about these "reports" and please do not say it's oil shale or sand!

Of course they 'have' it, but till they get the hands on it... it's taking a looooong time... and after that, the decline on overall production is so big that won't matter much.
And of course, that it's not easy oil, therefor low flows, high prices.

The numbers that I know about are near 50-60 billion barrels... crude oil that is.

That same commenter was crowing about a new well extracting 1000 barrels a day. Obviously the guy has orders of magnitude issues and also doesn't know the difference between reserves and extraction rates.

Good, more people entered into the "fertilizer" count, as opposed to the "survivor" count.

Much of what this guy is saying will happen within the next 50 years will likely happen within the next 10. The people commenting sound like drug addicts whose supply is being threatened.

It's mostly oil shale and tar sands. Sorry.

Hey remember, even if it was all light sweet crude, 250 billion bbls would only extend the 'party' about another four years, assuming we can extract half of it.

Right. I just suppose the idea is so scary, cognitive dissonance come into play every time. Is anybody here a peakoiler that hasn't spent a couple of night awake, reading and going over numbers until the hard truth lands on you. Haven't we all had doubts somewhere?

It's denial. Next these guys will be crying for a nuke that blows the Iranians out of existence and allows the full extraction of their oil. Gas will shine in the dark.

NO! A thousands time no!

Resource discoveries aren't a drive thru snack that can be consumed on the fly!

If we found another Ghawar tomorrow, we'd get 5 million barrels a day for forty years.

Shale will give us a couple million barrels a day for hundreds of years, or as long as the environment holds up.

{Sorry for the rant, but this has become a pet peeve of mine. Converting reserves to years/months at current consumption sends a very wrong message!}
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

That was a very useful comment, helped put the problem in context. However, doesn't the data show that increase in production after the start of exploration is quite fast? How much time, really, would it take to get another (fictitious) Ghawar up-and-running and pumping out the goods? Any idea?

Depends on many factors.

Short answer: not nearly fast enough!

Look at the capital that has been flowing into the energy sector at an ever-increasing rate these past four years.

Where is the commersurate increase in production? Where is it? Huh?

I'm hearing crickets again!

Right. It's not just the renewables that take a long time and capital to develop. The only difference, I guess, is that at least oil drilling is a true and tested technology.

Thanks for the info!

Those comments where probably the most retarted things I've seen this month. Some fine examples.

"Yawnnnnnnnnn, these vermin crawl out of the woodwork all the time. I suppose because this twit states "this theory is fact" that will make it so? Stating something over and over doesn't make it so. I wonder if this melon-head graps the oxymoron of "this theory is fact"? Much like the press already announcing the Dalibama as the next president. Oil to $80 or less per barrel and right quick. More good news? The left will finally be exposed as the agents who kept our own coal, oil and nuke resources bottled up. They have no defense for this position. Much akin to the Dalibama saying he would "oppose the surge again" even though it is an overhelming success"

wow...

"The sky is faling the sky is falling and we're all gonna die! Food riots? ROFL Let me guess...he's trying to sell something."

Hope he dies of starvation LOL

"This guy's probably bought lots of oil future contracts. Brah !! Oil supply's coming down, but it isn't as grim as he painted. End of suburbs........ why not the end of civilization. HAHA !!"

Yes that's how it is, you're so smart!

"All this guy is worried about is selling more coppies of his book. People like him and the people that buy his book are the reason oil is as high as it is. Damn Speculators."

Ah yes ofc it's the speculators GAH! Damn them all to hell.

"who cares?"

"What is he selling??????????? No it is time to shoot the messenger"

It goes on and on, people really are sheep, except sheep are cuter

Another uberconservative?
It was a conservative president who locked up drilling ANWR in 1970 - Tricky Dick- as an executive order, and it is still locked up today.
Bush the first locked up the outer continental shelf 17 years ago, and it was only released from that executive order a week ago.

These executive orders were put in place to try to keep oil prices high. They have had a greater effect than any whining by environmental whackos, to keep us from drilling.

Now its the liberals fault that we are running out of oil?
Get a clue.
