Boone pickens has the luxury of not needing to get a big bank loan to fund his venture. A small wind power company needs to raise cash from the bank to fund their projects. In order to get these loans they need to get a guaranteed long term price for their power so that the bank feels confident they can get their money back. Once they have signed these long term contracts their is little uncertainty left in the project. The accountants can estimate the future revenue stream and the future costs and price the stock accordingly. These aren't the stocks that will go through the roof because their potential for profitability is already well known. Sure they are money spinners as are other utilities, but that is taken into account when setting the price.

Hi Buggy,

I am also quite new here... I have been trying to be as self sufficient as possible (because I believe it is good for me and the environment, and I am also practising for PO).

I particularly like the saying "what am I doing in this hand basket, and where am I going?" because I think that is where a lot of people are... they know things are changing but don't know why...

Welcome!

hello from Htown

Postby MikeInHouston » Sun 29 Jun 2008, 13:26:35

I have become a true believer in just the last few weeks, I have been busy since making my preperations. Currently We live in the suburbs. I intend to make our stand in the piney woods of east Texas, mainly due to abundent rainfall.

I believe things are going to get pretty bad shortly, but I am more optimistic than many. I think we will be able to struggle along in 1930's style for a number of years. I like to keep it optimistic, since I am trying to raise a family. Neverless, we intend to rely on ourselfs and have plenty of ammunition. (for squirrels and such)

I look foward to participating in this forum.

Using a keyword in the search forum may help you to find the threads in which you are interested. Please do ask questions as the need arises. The Planning for the Future forum is especially helpful.
AND: take periodic breaks from the reading-this subject can be a bit overwhelming at times.

Another Okie!

Postby prairiegyrl » Thu 03 Jul 2008, 15:02:53

Hi!

What a great site this is! I'm glad I have the summer off to peruse otherwise I would never get any sleep. [smilie=new_sleeping.gif]

I am off for the summer because I am a teacher and I am really curious about how TSHTF will impact my employment. Any thoughts?

Yes, I have lots of thoughts on that, but I don't want another terse PM from a mod, so let me just say,

Hmmm....is teaching a no-no subject around here? Or is it the advice part?

Anyway, your pic entertains and nauseates me at the same time.

My wife is a teacher. The low pay in OK was a big reason that we left for Texas. It's also more conducive to my field (architecture).

Cheers!

Welcome prairiegyrl.

My personal feeling is that education is a decent place to be, as long as you are careful to become a part of a community. Live and teach in a place where you can get to know all of your students' parents, and they all know you. Become important to how that community is raising their children. Also be willing to alter the curriculum you are prepared to teach. The things we need our kids to know may change a bit. Use your knowledge of what's in store to guide your study of potential subjects.

Education will not die in hard times - in fact it may become more important than ever - but the current educational system just might. No matter what profession you're in, be prepared for paradigm shift and economic contraction.

Perhaps someday you'll be paid in produce instead of cash. :)

Nice to have you here.

Thanks Coyote for the reply. I know education could vastly change. I'm ok with that. I'm torn between staying at the small town school where I teach or trying to get a job in the much larger town where my husband works.

Regardless, I will absorb as much of this site as possible.

Perhaps you thinking about more expensive energy and its impact on your employment might be more beneficial to the community?

Most here aren't teachers but many have kids in school....

What are your thoughts?

Your way of saying contribute before asking for "free" advice? ;)

Ok, I will play.

My school district is already cutting busing in town and only busing in the rural kids. Fuel costs were too much. Parents are really ticked. I haven't yet figured out how my daughter will get from the Jr. High to my location. They used to run buses from school to school and faculty kids could ride.

More impact? How much longer will a food program be feasible? I see that being cut or extremely modified. Sports played out of town will no longer exist and field trips will take place on foot only. The school week will be shortened and I see terms being shortened too with longer breaks between them.

I see a lot of these things as good changes for our schools. A lot of food programs are still terrible, but still the only meal many kids will get. Too much money is spent of competitive sports so cutting that will save a lot.

I teach 6th grade at an upper elementary so we do not have sports. But I could see music teachers, band teachers and PE teachers all losing their jobs. I can see the possibility of all the schools being k-12 so there is a school every child can walk to. Actually, if things get really bad then we may go back to k-8.

Naw, I wasn't challenging you. I wasn't even giving you a hard time.

I was just wondering how you might think to change your circumstance or more important your curriculum next session after reading here a bit.

BTW, my Son flies AWACS out of Tinker (he and my 2 grandkids live close) and the SIL and Daughter and (2 more grandkids) will be stationed at Ft. Sill in a couple months so I do have more than a passing interest in how teachers in OK see things.
