Guilty pleasures

Unread postby cualcrees » Mon 30 Jun 2008, 09:29:10

Yesterday, while I was watching TV, I saw this lady talking about a "vera wang" dress or something (don't know if that's how it's spelled); and I said to myself: "Boy, am I gonna be glad when PO takes care of this clowns in the so-called "fashion industry" - think "The devil wears Prada".

So, here's the question: Which industry, hobby, product, group of people, etc. would you love to see disappear thanks to the magic of PO?

And yes, I know that once whole industries start going the way of the Dodo we're all pretty much screwed, but this is just for fun, so lighten up!

What's your guilty pleasure?

Advertising!! I can't wait until you don't have to do the following:

1. Watch commercials in front of a movie you paid for.
2. Billboards
3. TV
4. Radio.

Of course if advertising crashes then probably TV, Movies, Radio, and everything else is a steaming pile of &%$ so it won't matter.

Fun nevertheless. :)

Malls - cant stand them
Video game industry - such a waste of time
Gas stations - For obvious reasons
Car dealerships - I cannot wait for these pollution factories to go out of business.
Hollywood - Cant really think of a general industry but, no more hollywood would be fan freakin tastic.

The number one Guilty please I would like to see disappear would be professional sports.

To think of all the money wasted on professional sports of all kinds. There was a time when sports used to mean something people did for fun not something certain people are paid millions of dollars to dedicate their lives to while the rest us couch potatoes watched vicariously. Motor sports like Nascar, total waste. Golf is joke. Baseball used to be a national treasure but it was turned into a big business all for the money. I won't even go into America's irrational obsession with Football. America should be more like the rest of the world and play real Football (Soccer) with none of this soccer mom crap.

40 kinds of chips on grocery store shelves - same goes with cereal.

Not necessarily guilty pleasures - just hate all the waste and excess:
plastic water bottles
cheap chinese toys
sports crap
junk mail

Don't mind advertising so much if it's clever and purposeful. I'm probably going to get smacked for saying this, but if I'm going to be forced to watch an ad I want it to be entertaining.

Could do without the promotional items - although a pen is handy every now and then. And I got a rocking reusable grocery bag from some investment firm.

Telemarketing - Spamming - Professional Sports - Hollywood Gossip Magazines(but not Hollywood, people need hope, and a means of lifting their spirits) - Gambling/Casinoes - Much of television(not all though) - Porn Industry - Tobacco Industry - Companies that produce Pills like Viagra- Fashion

Basically useless crap that doesn't really enrich anyone's life.

There are more, but many of the ones I want to stop existing, (lobbying/political parasites/war industry/drug cartels) but they'l grow as TSHTF.

Vacations.....Driving around....cruising.....travel......road trips!

I love getting out of Alaska a couple times each year....flying off to somewhere and renting a car and driving around for a couple of weeks, with the trip planned around hitting a few ski resorts or doing a hike in the Grand Canyon or snorkelling with manatees in Florida or taking ferries to the Greek Islands or some such thing.

Oh well.

Its been a lot of fun but Peak Oil will put the kibosh on road trips soon enough. :)

Plantagent whatever you like to do in your spare time is your business. And what ever lifestyle you choose is fine but, why not just say I like to take "friends" to the Greek Islands. I think people would find it less offensive.

RVs - big, ugly, wasteful monstrosities that are money sinks even with cheap energy.
Pro sports - giant commercials to sell things to people who can't get over tribalism "my people's XYZ is better than yours just because" mentality.

Medicine bottles that come with a plastic wrap over a plastic cap that won't come off that covers a shiny tab and when you finally pass that dexterity test you need tweezers to get the cotton ball out.

Tiny little packages of ketchup that have a corner that says 'tear here' and when you tear there it won't tear. Then after desperate measures, you get ketchup on your shirt.

Car racing and monster truck rallies.

I find it amazing that movies like Cars, Transformers, and Speed Racer can come out this late in the game, continuing to glorify the automobile.

Agreed, except for that part about a bunch of guys in shorts running around chasing a ball and callign it "soccer". Rugby sure. Soccer is for pansies.

Today some lady in a big SUV cut me off while I was driving back home - she even had the nerve of honking at me like it was my fault -, and all I could think of was: "stupid SUV; PO can't come quick enough! (I know it's not a rational response, and if I stop to think about it I really hate the idea of the SHTF, but still...)

Do you find yourselves having that kind of thoughts more and more every day??

I hate and would love to see disappear:

The vast majority of TV programs
TV commercials/manipulative advertising in general
Car culture
Professional sports
Cosmetic surgery

cualcrees, I have long thought that the proliferation of personal vehicles is a major reason for the deterioration of our social fabric. Never am I more tense or angry than when I am behind the wheel of a car. When I meet people for the first time, I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt that they are decent human beings. However, when I encounter these same people on the road, I automatically assume that they are a$$holes and have to work hard to control my road rage.

I am ashamed to admit that fashion is a guilty pleasure of mine and I will be sad to see it go. However, I'm teaching myself to sew, so maybe there's still hope!

hollywood - You kidding me? I just bought a blu ray!
Owen Wilson - He's my guilty pleasure.
Corruption - going to get worse, not better

I'm really looking forward to the end of modern child-rearing practices, which have turned many children into fat, lazy, disrespectful, mentally ill punkasses. I'll be so happy when kids have to be self-reliant again, and will actually be free enough to make mistakes and learn from them. When I was a kid, if I didn't have to do chores or go to school, after breakfast my mom would boot my ass out of the house and tell me to "go play, and you're not allowed back in the house till 5 unless you're bleeding." So I went out and found other kids in the neighborhood, and we made up games, built forts, climbed trees, explored forests, started fires, got dirty, had water fights, had real fights, looked at stolen Playboys, learned about sex, tried sex, tried booze, tried cigarettes, pulled pranks, went on bike rides, threw rocks, invented stuff, destroyed stuff, and generally just had a lot of fun and got into a lot of trouble. We had real experiences, and were independent and responsible for our actions (if we got caught). There was no schedule, no supervision, and no whining. Nowadays, though, kids spend all their time watching TV, playing video games, texting, IMing, and going to scheduled, supervised activities where there is no real danger or meaningful life experience to be had. When I see kids today, I get pissed because so many of them are such whiny, disrespectful punks, but I also feel sorry for them, because they seem so unhappy. I'm hoping peak oil changes all this, and returns us to the days when kids were free to be kids in their free time (when they're not working in the fields).
