That's right. The problem is there is no commission to be made on convincing people that peak oil is a big problem.
The reason that I have mostly given up on a lot of real world discussions with people about peak oil is that I have become so conversant with all of the arguments for and against the peak oil thesis that it's just not fun for me to shred any argument that someone comes up with for what "they" are going to do, or what the government could do if it wanted to, or what technology will do for us at some point in the future.
It feels like playing Whac-A-Mole with a jackhammer.
There are, of course, more rigorous discussions to be had about the various peak oil scenarios, but most people aren't interested enough to spend the time to really get up to speed on the issues (and when they do, they tend to turn doomer), so you wind up talking to people who don't know that much about the issue, but still believe that there is a simple solution that you have somehow completely overlooked.
