Peak Oil, what can you do about it? BTW, spec, it's 'angrily.' 8) As in "Spec angrily responds to PMS for giving a crap about spelling when the World is about to explode."

Well after a few years of posting and keeping his sh*t together I'd say SPECOP deserves some lattiude. I was musing with another Mod this week about how even the established poster's anxieties surface. I let you in on a little secret, it happens to the Mods as well. It usually is about 18 months when it becomes so overwhelming and it appears they flip out. It's quite spectacular to watch an "Old Faithful" vent a geyser of emotional steam. If you hang around here long enough you get use to it but lately we have been attracting alot of tourists.

Bitch away Spec. Bitch away.

From the "Boomer Doomer" thread:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Zardoz', '
')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Nicholai', '
')...But seriously, you were the most babied generation in all human history, I hope you cherished it.

Absolutely. You are 100 percent right. White male American boomers have been the most fortunate demographic group in the history of the human race. The world really was our oyster.

And we knew it, too. How could we not notice? Yer damned right we cherished it. I've had many conversations with my fellow Chosen Ones about it over the years.

We were simply lucky enough to be born in the right place, at the right time, to the right parents. That's all there was to it. We've been reaping the rewards all our lives.

I didn't miss out on the party, Spec. My timing was absolutely perfect. I was there just when it started, I made the most of the peak party years, and I'm of an age now that I'll probably expire just as the last party-goers stagger and stumble out the door into the cold gray dawn of the morning after.

If I were in your shoes I'd feel precisely the same way. I have nothing whatsoever to complain about, but anybody younger than me sure as hell does. The younger you are, the more screwed you are. I shudder to think what my 38-year-old daughter, my 18-year-old son, and, most of all, my 2-year-old granddaughter will see in their lives. My son won't have it like I did. He won't be able to glide through life on cruise control like I did and end up living in comparative luxury and ease like I do now. He's going to have to scrape and scramble and bust his ass just to survive. I lived in a world of ever-improving prospects and seemingly unlimited possibilities. His world will be one of ever-diminishing opportunity and constantly-decreasing choices.

And it will all be because of timing.

Yeah, this does really suck, Spec. I sympathize completely with how you're feeling. Sorry you missed out on Prime Time.

I'm sorry all of you missed it. It was a great time and place. We'll never see it's like again.

Kids born now are living at the end of the oil age.

They will be riding in a horse and carriage to their proms, and not just for show.

I feel sorry for them, but they don't even know what all the fuss is about.

I asked some of my students if they had to choose, which they would rather do without, a cell phone or a car.

Most picked a car.

They may not be as attatched to this whole fossil fuel thing as we think.

They are just living their lives.

We are the ones who will suffer the most when it's hard to get gasoline.

We're the ones who are addicted.

But sweetheart, that wouldn't really sell so well now would it? I'm sure if we tried we could find some ads with hunks in them to sell diamonds. Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Then comes rubies and pearls and exquisite jewelry, fancy expensive perfumes, lots and lots of shoes and fur coats and rich clothing. Oh the list is endless, what the material girl wants. If she's a little more down to earth, she wants a McMansion and a SUV and a fat bank account. :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Revi', 'K')ids born now are living at the end of the oil age...

...which can also be referred to as the "Golden Era":

Collapse of civilization thread

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he period from 1950 to 2000 will be remembered as the Golden Era of modern civilization, the pinnacle reached by humans after a million years of evolution. This brilliant half-century was sponsored largely by fossil fuels, especially oil, which brought unprecedented economic growth, plentiful transportation and a rich and diverse lifestyle.

See what I mean about my timing? Those were "my" fifty years. And, once again, it was pure luck for me and my peers. We earned none of what we were given. It just fell into our laps.

Feel free to be bitter and resentful towards us. It's about time we paid some sort of price for what we got...

47 for me in 2000.

I think the idea age now would be about 70 or so. Those born around 1938.

I'm not bitter or jealous. Just because you lived in the best time man has ever known doesnt mean you had it all handed to you. One thing that has been a constant throughout life was the need to work. Well, up until the Golden Age for some...

But point being, you still had to get out and hustle to get a good life. It isnt like you were born and handed the keys to a Porsche and a house.

Now interestingly enough the Golden Age did allow lazy people to not work via welfare and social programs. But for those who didnt want to be a bum, they still had to work.

You just got a whole lot more for your work. A guy 100 or 200 or 1000 years ago would work his arse off and go home with a bit to eat and maybe buy some new shoes. In our gae we go home with enough to buy a car, house, food and entertainment.

But we've always had to work.

Hunter-gatherers work an average of four hours a day for their complete living, often working only a few days a week. Not saying we can or should be hunter-gatherers! Just that folks haven't always worked as hard as we do now. They just did with a lot fewer luxuries. Plenty of free time, though. :)

Specop, you can still have a good life, you just have to be willing to do what needs to be done. Start your own business, you won't get any where working for someone else. You will always be their b-tch. Any economy has winners and losers. We have some time before the SHTF, so why not make the best of it.

If you follow the recommended program; finish high school, go to college, get a cubicle job at a big company and kiss up, you will never get anywhere. What you need to do is follow the money and be at the right place at the right time, bull$hit a little, etc. Get out of your comfort zone, it always holds you back. Maybe you should get into Sales. Anything where you have to deal directly with customers (customers with deep pockets) tends to be high paying.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Specop_007', '
')Sure, maybe it sounds selfish. In retrospect it does. Then again I'm a selfish guy. Back in high school I knew I wanted big houses and fast cars. And damnit I went out and tried to make it happen. And it WOULD have, if it hadnt been for some stupid farking thing called Peak Oil that decided to rear its ugly head.

Sounds like you want your money back! We sold you a dream that will no longer be true. But you didn't pay anything tangible for it yet. Did you spend a whole life in a cubicle kissing up and you still have a mortgage on your house? I did.

Just finally saw the entire "Apocalypse Now" (all 202 minutes of it) and it resonates quite well with the anger we feel. My list of doomer videos so far is:

Soylent Green (not a great movie, but apropos about over population).
A Crude Awakening (excellent documentary, great music)
Apocalypse Now (about Vietnam experience as not all boomers were so privileged, and they trade barrels of diesel fuel for sex with playboy bunnies and who ever said we didn't correctly value the worth of oil!).
