I'm sure glad my parents grew up during the great depression and we had a rather simple life as kids. Today's kids - gotta have: a new ride, designer clothe, cell phones, high speed Internet, HDTV with cable, designer coffee, sports club memberships and are smothered by their parents. Yikes!

I was born in the early '60's in a single parent home with 6 other kids on the borderline of "poverty' with a mom who lived in the depression as well. We learned survival early in life, way ahead of the times today.

I had a Gen-Xer renting in my home and the poor kid didn't even know how to wash dishes by hand: "What! No dishwasher?, how do you wash the dishes?" And he couldn't figure out why he could balance his checkbook and was always broke. The examples of others are so numerous.

The tragedy of a prosperous society is most of the children of the era are breded and but not raised. What I mean is the kids were just living in their McSuburbs dens but parents didn't show them (raised them) to live and survive outside the den. Poppa and Momma bear eventually take their cubs out to hunt for food. No sitting in front of the TV and seeing the Gentle Ben way of life.
THE SIMPLE LIFE: One frozen pond, a few sticks, a little round puck, and a bunch of rowdy kids.

You have to understand, I still think quite rationally and objectively about PO. Its not that I'm blind in my anger and am making poor decisions.

I do have kids, 3 to be exact. And I do spend a lot of time with them. The 2 older go shooting with me, I take them all fishing, we garden, go for bike rides, play catch. All that jazz.

But we're losing more then just big houses and fast cars and a comfortable living. In a few years the entirety of our world will be within a few hundred miles. I wanted to go places and see things. Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, Pyramids of Giza and Mayan Ruins.

But I suppose it is what it is. I do seem to take more enjoyment in the little things these days. Planting vegetables with my son. My son is quite the little gardener, he actually has 3 maple trees growing from helicopters he found laying around. He wants to plant everything! A steak on the grill, catch with my oldest.

But my anger isnt the sort of defeatist attitude some have. I like to think anyways that I've always dealt well with failure and obstacles. I'm sure many of the posters here will in regards to PO anyways. This is hardly the time to sit on ones ass and shed tears because our cush way of life is ending.
Doesnt mean ya gotta like it though. So while I plan and work hard trying to get things in order for the slide down, it doesnt mean I like it. :-D

Do kid's nowadays learn how to hunt and fish, cut wood by hand, build shelters, fix mechanical stuff, entertaining themselves like hiking in the woods or swiming at the ol watering hole? Did they learn how to play without Mum and dad watching or controling all their activities when younger? Can they live without A/C or mp3 players?

Kids in general? Or mine? Kids these days learn about Nintendo, cable and the internet.
Mine learn that and fishing, hunting, shooting, metalworking to a small degree, carpentry to an even smaller degree, landscaping, gardening, farming, etc etc etc.

The name says it all. Delusional with not so subtle references to special forces "spec," police/control "cop" and the sexy rich spy "007." Grow up!

it's kind of like a brand.

http://www.specop007.com/

that's a dead link, maybe the domain name is still available.

one thing you have that the Visual Effects world needs - the ability to make accurate gun sound effects. sounds like you got all the hardware. OK, maybe that's not a Visual Effect, it's an Audio Effect.

i can imagine video game & animation directors calling you up and saying, "hey, Spec, i need a ricochet sound."

In a physical confrontation, I am pretty sure I have the upper hand against most, but even I am not crazy enough to go up against spec and his mountain of firepower.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Y')es, the boomers are utlimately to blame. It was in their hands to give my generation a good future, it should have been their duty, but they have left us with hell. And we're going to have to support them when they get old.

Yeah, like the thousands of dollars I've paid into Social Security will one day be mine? Ha. Ha. Ha. As we speak, my tax dollars are keeping countless old people alive and heavily medicated so don't sell me that "we're going to have to support them when they're old" crap. How much have YOU paid into Social Security? I've been paying into it since 1974 and what are the odds my shoebox of money will be waiting for me when I show up? About one in six quadrillion.

Baby boomers had the great blessing of being raised by World War II veterans and survivors, so we were taught about personal responsibility and commitment and sacrificing self for the greater good, all of which are life lessons the latest generations seem to have utterly missed.

We were taught to back up a few steps and look at the bigger picture and to pay attention to history for in history can we learn more about the future, etc., etc. And we were taught that debt is a plague-spot to be avoided at all costs and it appears that ours was the last generation of savers. Average American savings rate is now MINUS four percent.

Lastly, the education we received in our 1950s and 60s schools was first rate and we learned many things, including HOW TO SPELL. You might want to edit your post title.

Oh, I hear ya. Living in Los Angeles and having family on the east coast, I haven't been able to take real vacations. I've had to just keep flying back to the east coast. So all my travel fantasies were never realized and probably won't be unless I decide to leave the US for good. It's a total George Bailey situation.

Spec_Op 007.
Read your post. Interesting how similar our positions and place in life is. I'm fully prepared to be the cleanup crew and now know that you are also of the same mind. We are clearly brothers in mind and spirit.

I went to a celebration of a college today. Great place and I talked with the former head of the physical plant. The guy can do anything and fix anythign on the planet. He is really worried about the cost of everthing. He even shared with me the fact that all these buildings are going to be to expenseive to heat this winter. He is already preparing for a big change and a depression. "It's all caused by the financial interests that are to concerned with themselves rather then doing the right thing...protecting the people. We are all getting screwed by the financial interests and their pets the politicians." When the government loses the faith of these kind of people...the end is not far behind.

I told him that I am very hopeful. The bullshit that we have been living with is about to end. It is all about food, clothing shelter and community. The rest is just bullshit that will be blown away in the wind. Spec OP 007, keep the faith dude! Your going to do great! Take no prisoners and build up your community.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('emersonbiggins', 'p')lus f*cking one, man. plus f*cking one.

It's all economic regression from here on out - things that were meant to be will never be, despite years of promises and preparation. It's sad, yes, but interesting nonetheless. I say make the most of it, regardless of how bad it gets. There's always guns and ammo, for the REAL bad times.

Hey EB. We've had the pleasure of meeting in person and if I recall you yourself are/were on upwardly mobile trajectory in your life and career. Beautiful bride, promising new job(?). We didn't have a whole lot of time to get better aquainted but I am surprised that you aren't more bitter as Spec_Op 007 is.

Yet, by virtue of where we met, I can infer that you do indeed intend to make the best of it. But I have two questions: Are you the least bit bitter that your hopes and dreams will or have been interrupted? And, you said you find this time interesting, as I do. In fact, I find it fascinating. Do you feel a sense of being in this epochal time in the history of humanity?

And to Spec_Op 007:

I don't know about anyone else, but sounds to me like you already have a great life, sans the big house, the fast car, and the Pyramids. And who knows, as you adapt, you may still have at least some of those things. If I were you, I'd forget about status and "success" and concentrate on what you already have. And prepare for the worst while hoping and striving for a smooth transition to whatever awaits us all.

There isn't a teleology to this life. So don't let the cats in here make you feel bad about your feelings of having something taken away from you. Maybe you can find solice in albert camus works, especially the myth of sisyphus.

In general it's just good let it out.

lerning how to spel :o I remember a fine teacher in 7 grade, 1967, who taught grammar. Spec is spelling impaired, but he's doing a lot of the right things. I give him a pass on spelling. (would be nice, though, if he got the difference between 'then' and 'than')

True. I don't detect bitterness in you, Specop. You're just venting. I do the same, on occassion. You're just another human being in the parade of modern life, stuck on the misery float of peak oil, not knowing if or how the procession is going to end.
