I don't know about Hippies or Mad Max but I imagine most of us will be living alot like the Amish. Those folks work hard and cooperate.

I'm willing to work reasonably hard and I think cooperation will be essential, but I have no desire to live anything like the Amish live.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('MonteQuest', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Kilgore_Trout', ' ')uh... sorry but stone age is exactly, literally what they were. If your best tools are made of knapped stone and bone, you are stone age.

I have been studying and photographing the Anasazi Culture for over 25 years.
The Anasazi were Neolithic. They had no written language, no knowledge of the wheel, no beasts of burden, and no knowledge of metals.
That photo is Cliff Palace, Mesa Verde NP. I used to be a Park Ranger there.
Google Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon NHP for a real 800 room, 5 story, passive solar heated apartment complex built circa 900 to 1150 A.D.

heh, so at least they were in"high" stone age.
that must have been a super-super-cool job

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ebyss', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('deMolay', 'A')n infected tooth was quite often a death sentence.

True.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he lives of hunter gathers was very short and brutish.

Untrue. I might also add that Native Americans were stone age hunter gatherers until the arrival of Columbus and the conqiustadors. Though they warred with neighbouring tribes, their lives weren't short or brutish - but full and healthy, with elders being clear of mind, sound of body and the most respected member of the tribe. Hunter gatherers generally had fewer health problems than us, and toothache would not have been as common, most didn't suffer cavities as we do (down to diet btw - as are most of our health problems in the western world).

I was surprised to learn a little factoid while visiting a park on the site of an old French fort here in New York. The local Native Americans at the time averaged close to 6 feet tall while the French soldiers averaged between 4.5 feet and 5 feet tall. I would imagine this was largely related to diet and nutrition for the two separate cultures. Clearly the local population was living quite well all things considered.

That's awesome, thanks. I'm leaning towards getting a small scooter like this. I saw a 60-year-old man on a scooter yesterday in my neighborhood.

Mad Max Future

Unread postby TheDude » Fri 27 Jun 2008, 11:44:39

By "Mad Max" I have the first film in mind. For those who haven't seen it (?!?!?), it depicts a pre-apocalyptic world - something dire has happened, there are toxic zones with road signs that caution against entering, and the population seems to have gone down - but essentially it depicts criminals harassing the populace and stealing fuel from tanker trucks, and police coping as best they can, hampered by beaurocrats. Lights are still on, people go to the beach on vacation and drink in nightclubs, etc.

Obviously we see in Nigeria or Mexico parallels at play in the present - rebels bombing pipelines, kidnapping oilfield workers, corruption at all levels of distribution. What can we do to minimize this in the future - have guards defend gas stations round the clock, for instance? Might be a good use for the unemployed. Will an overtaxed police force be unable to guard trucks bringing in supplies? Would trucks of necessity begin to travel in convoys, ala trans-Atlantic shipments in WWII?

The security situation in Iraq is probably a good guide for what it might take to restore and maintain order.

Dark Angel, only minus Jessica Alba. I kind of doubt that women could achieve that level of hotness in that world.
