Yeah, that was pretty dire. There was a lot of controversy about it. Steven King is on record saying he loved it and that anyone who gave away the last five minutes should be hung. Frank Darabont also directed The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. In King's version of The Mist, the folks in the grocery store all die and Drayton and crew manage to get more gas, drive further south, find a place to hold up and hear a garbled radio message from a town further south. Darabont, who is Hungarian, didn't think that would work for cinema.

Netflix just shipped this one to me yesterday! Please, no spoilers!

Wow, that was a great flick!

I watched Romero's The Crazies a few nights ago. I never get sick of classic doom porn

Next week I have rare gem called "Legend of the 7 Vampires". A Hamner horror flick directed by the Shaw Brothers. Where else can you find Peter Cushing fighting kung fu vampires?

Anyone who enjoyed Gummo needs to see 'Bad Boy Bubby'. Hoo boy. 'Nuff said. 'Chopper' is an absolute classic as well. Gotta hand it to those Aussies, they have some twisted celluloid stashed away on the shelf at the back...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('hardtootell', 'G')reat flicks-IMHO

"Happiness"<- very dark humour
"three days of the condor"
"amatstat"
"the spanish prisoner"
"king of the hill"<- not the cartoon
"angellas ashes"
"lord of the rings"

I can't wait till "The Road" is released
I like your movies :) Happiness is kind of sick and depressing isn't it?

Mamet is a wonderful underrated director. If you can get a hold of it look for the House of Games. Similar to The Spanish Prisoner, about scams.

The Road is the creepiest, scariest, most depressing post-apocalyptic book written. I loved it. I can't imagine a movie based on that book. Who is in it? When is it coming out? It is going to rock the movie world. Truly a post-peak masterpiece. Except for the morel mushrooms.

Certainly agree Mamet is terrific. The Spanish Prisoner was not bad, but House of Games is a classic. Joe Mantegna's line, "thank you, can I have another" was brilliant.

I haven't seen the movie in years. What was so good about that movie moment? (without spilling the beans of course)

Can't say without spilling the beans. The ending was pretty cool, too, and I can say that without spilling the beans. The lady shrink becomes a petty kleptomaniac.

American Werewolf in London

Also, How to Get Ahead in Advertising

I loved both of these movies. They're both darkly humorous.

I loved the satire in How to Get Ahead in Advertising.

A good cult film for action was "The Warriors." Very low budget, all unknown actors, very entertaining.

"Ugetsu monogatari" 1953 Beautiful, haunting Japanese ghost film by Kenzi Mizoguchi. More of an elitist film than cultic.

Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari 1919-20 My vote for best film of all time. If you haven't seen this, you're cinematically deprived.

In college I saw an excellent double feature of "Freaks" (Tod Browning 1932) and "Eraserhead" (David Lynch 1977). People left the theatre vowing never ever ever to have children! :?

how can we talk abot gummo and not mention kids. The only movie I've ever had to turn off because it was just too depressingly disturbing to watch entirely.

Also all doomer peakoilers should love deathrace 2000.

If you're into cult horror then the original Texas chainsaw massacre is amazingly brutal for the time. Also cannibal holocaust. Just remember those animal killings are brutal and real. Really unless you're fucked up or looking to desensitive yourself I'd recommend against the last one. It's just wrong.

Well if you are refering to Tummler and Solomon they caught stray cats . FYI-The title Gummo was a reference to Gummo Marx.

Apparently, "The Warriors" was based on this.

I found the reference here.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')inally, it was widely known back in the day that The Warriors was based on the ancient Greek nonfiction tale Anabasis, written around 370 BC by the Spartan general Xenophon (it's also published under the title The Persian Expedition). In this classic tale, a battalion of 10,000 Spartan mercenaries join the Persian emperor Cyrus for a war in Asia Minor (i.e. Turkey). Cyrus's army is defeated, the Spartan leaders are captured, and the remaining force must make their way across country, fighting various hostile tribes along the way, experiencing their own internal power struggles, until they reach the safety of the sea. I'm shocked that only one reviewer seemed to be familiar with this; in the 70s almost nobody talked about the movie without mentioning it.

I already said this, they shot stray cats and sold them to a grocer who sold the meat to Chinese restaurants. Then they used the money to buy sniffing glue and strawberry milkshakes. The whole point of the movie was to show how godawful ugly these people were. Hence my original quote of Dylan.
