Back in the seventies, I once watched George Carlin, on prime time TV, stand on stage and say absolutely nothing for a good four minutes.

The audience was in stitches, and so was everyone in the room with me at the time.

It was truly amazing. I've been looking for a video clip...no luck yet.

From Novus:

Carlin mentions TEOTWAWKI, and peak oil.

Yeah, thanks to Novus for posting that. It really explains where Carlin's mind was heading the last few years. I'm sorry for not having gone to see him live in concert.

For a guy who had used and abused a lot of stuff, his mind was quick to the end. He was a bright man, no doubt.

I am wondering if he's finding out now about the "invisible man's" true existence?

My prayer for him, as he will need some help:
"O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Your Mercy".

(This is commonly called the Fatima prayer)

I'm not.

Pitch black, as for all. He knew that better than anybody.

No regrets.

He was very talented, obviously. He could shoot the gags and witticisms staccato without effort as fast as you could think for quite a while on stage. Marvelously funny. Had the Irish gift of gab and was the very first host of Saturday Night Live.

Gonna miss this guy commenting on the economic ecological problems we've gotten ourselves into. I remember him from the Wonderful WINO days all the way through.

He's lucky to get out now, before the real problems start.

I remember watching him as a kid on The Ed Sullivan show. Blew my mind. My family always watched Ed Sullivan. I saw The Beatles make their American debut on that show. Seeing George Carlin go is like how some older folks must have felt when Frank Sinatra died, or Jimmy Stewart. An icon of an age. Bob Hope was supposed to be this comedic genius but I never laughed. George made me laugh.

A HUGE loss. Good Bye George!

George Carlin was about as far as you could get from f*&ks like Britney Spears and Michael Jackson. He hammered those schmucks into the ground!

One issue I have with George Carlin's cynicism is that its affected a new generation.

I find my son and daugher have taken on the attitude espoused by George in the "America is tyranny" skit. And, that pessism is the root of failure. George could have used his amazing insight and sharp mind to inspire, but he used it so often to depress. Its like he took a turn down a dark road sometime many years ago.

The central element of faith of all free people is that they control their own life, and that with hard work, their ambitions can become reality. That is optimism. George Carlin not so much riduculed, but threw cold water on those dreams of people, exhibiting the same kind of cyncism one associates with a Communist country. If one took most of what Carlin had to say, to heart, there is not much reason to work hard, or to invest oneself with added skills,. or to sacrifice today's pleasures. One may as well hang out and get high. That is a sad outlook. Perhaps it paralleled George's loss of faith in God.

I'll take pessimism over naivety and wishful thinking any day. The latter are what brought us here, to a state of unfulfilled existence, devoid of meaning, yet filled with material bounty, and the notion that humankind can somehow prevail where it has failed miserably, on many counts, in the past.

Has anything ever topped "Class Clown"? Still hilarious after 36 years. Whenever I think about the kid that "passed an entire cheese sandwich through his nose" I do a spit take.

My point? I loved the comedy of Carlin as well as his honesty.
As far as the record labels go...who cares. I have friends who have recorded on most majors and indies owned by majors, and they are no Britney or Jackson either. Go figure.

RIP George!
