One may as well hang out and get high. That is a sad outlook. Perhaps it paralleled George's loss of faith in God.
I'll take pessimism over naivety and wishful thinking any day. The latter are what brought us here, to a state of unfulfilled existence, devoid of meaning, yet filled with material bounty, and the notion that humankind can somehow prevail where it has failed miserably, on many counts, in the past.
