Cult Classic Films

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Thu 19 Jun 2008, 17:15:23

Thought I'd check out some "cult classic" movies. Came across Gummo. Insane. About a couple of weird kids who get money for strawberry milkshakes and glue to sniff by killing stray cats and selling them to a grocer who sells the cat meat to Chinese restaurants. Here's a typical scene:

in the tub for a shampoo and spaghetti

Reminds of those old Dylan lyrics:

Now the rainman gave me two cures
& he said jump right in
One was Texas medicine
the other was just railroad gin
like a fool I mixed them
& it strangled up my mind
now people just get uglier
and I have no sense of time

Crazy flick, very dark humor. I have seen Gummo five times. My favorite scene is when the Dad starts wrestling the card table. If you want something as dark but Peak oil related, try Bloodcar. You won't be the same after watching that.

You actually watched that 5 times??!! You're sick mule. I should talk, I watched The Mist 6 times. Well, 5, until last night when I showed it to my kids. They were fascinated. My 17 year old daughter was totally into it until the end when she said she hated it. Then she said get some more Steven King movies. heh heh. My youngest, she's 15, laughed at the monsters. Anyway, I'm downloading Bloodcar. Thanks for the tip.

I was tickled that prairiemule had seen Gummo 5 times. Actually, what I had in mind is a discussion of Cult Classic films so I renamed the thread. There is a movie called Disorganized Crime that is reported to be "considered by some" to be a cult classic. I sure would consider it so. It has Fred Gwynne, who played Herman Munster and the Judge in My Cousin Vinnie. Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy in Married With Children). Ruben Blades, the remarkable Panamanian Renaissance Man. also Hoyt Axton, Corbin Bernsen & Lou Diamond Phillips. It's a hilarious send up of bank heist flicks. *****

Currently watching Harold and Maude. Don't know yet but it looks promising.

Any recommendations?

Well, this is an obvious one, of course, but the biggest cult classic of all, viewed hundreds (and even thousands) of times by so many of its warped cult followers, will always and forever be "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

Googling it yields 4,650,000 hits. God knows how many web sites are devoted to it.

how about Re-Animator ?

it starts out slow, with some guy just trying to bring his cat back from the dead.

then it starts moving. the dis-embodied head orgy scene near the end has to be some sort of classic.

Ok I have a rare find for you if you have Netflix called Midnight Movies. It's a documentary on ecclectic cult films. It covers Night of Living Dead, Rocky Horror, El Topo, etc.

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Midnight_M ... rkid=64596

What makes this film such a rare gem is George Romero recalling a gig he did right before Night Of The Living Dead. His company located in Pittsburg was contracted to film "Mr Rogers gets a Tonsilectomy" for Mr Roger's neighborhood(circa 1966). This has to be the most creepiest Mr.Roger's Neighborhood bit ever made-which makes it funny. This bit is very rare and you cannot find "Mr Rogers gets a Tonsilectomy" on youtube or google video.

It's on the list alright, if you google cult classic movies. Just who decides what is and what isn't a cult classic is not known to me, however.

The Fogwas on this morning - haven't seen that in about 20 years. Didn't have time to check it out, but still remember one line - "There's a fog bank out there!"

Re-Animator has a very touching love scene.

Why'd the Gummo kid sport the Ed Grimley hair? That was reallly bizarre PMS.

I'll watch anything(and usually do). Lately I have been on a Samurai bug. Last week I watched Kurosawa's Throne of Blood, Hidden Fortress, and Ran.

Good day from Pheba, from the farm:
Taking a breather from baling hay.
I don't know what constitutes a "cult" following.
I do know there are several fanatic web-sites devoted to my favorite
show, ever...
Farscape.
The show
Got in my head, and I find myself falling asleep wishing I was
aboard a living ship, a Leviathin. Coping with hard times.
I never thought I could fall in love with a bunch of killer muppets., but I did.
The series starts slow, but if you stick with you, you get major payback.
Great writing, great actors.

Resurrection with Ellen burstyn is a little known film about a woman who survives a near death experience.
She develops the ability to heal with touch.
Her superstitious friends and family freak out when she refuses to
acknowledge her ability as a gift from God.
Awesome ending.

Tunes of Glory, a little known film starring Alec guinness. My hubby is Scottish, and loves wearing his kilt. Film is about a Scottish, kilt wearing military unit shortly after wwII. The ultimate kilt movie.

Deadly Harvest with Clint Walker. Okay, acting is not so good, but the scene where the hungry hordes kidnap and kill Walker's daughter's calf sends chills down my spine.
This hokey film fed my Peak Oil fears to the point where I can not view the film a second time.

Best kept secret concerning a cartoon, and a minor cult film.
How I spent my Vacation, Tiny Toons.
My 30 year old daughter grew up watching it. Now my 3 grandsons
adore it. Not available on DVD, only VHS.
Worth owning if you have kids, or you are a kid yourself.
Plucky Duck: "No Happy-Go-Pukey?"

Farscape, Farscape, Farscape.

Pheba.
