$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('AirlinePilot', 'F')rom a moderators standpoint, I don't think its that big a deal really. Graeme is harmless , he is not being inflammatory, profane or immature.

He even serves as a sort of denial barometer I think.

Some of the stuff he posts is actually marginally interesting, but I tend to agree with others about his motives. He's hopeful thats all. A troll? Maybe but harmless nonetheless.

Thank you AP. Actually, I do know that peak oil will happen, hence my interest in posting here so I am not denying it. Coincidently, Aaron re-posted at the beginning of this new thread what I think is one of the more important news releases published recently. That is the interview with Fatih Birol. I found this on the Energy Bulletin site. If you read the interview, you will see that the IEA are now taking the "message" of peak oilers like this group quite seriously. So it is ironic that I am being attacked for a view that I support - peak oil is near.

I am the first to use the world troll here, so I take it upon myself to elaborate on why:

I did not object to the article you posted which has now been merged into this thread. Nor did I object to the early stages of discussion that followed. I just found that the subject you chose, "North Sea Oil to last 100 years." a little over the top. That argument wasn't even centerpiece to the article you pointed to, so why did you choose that to be your subject, or title, to your thread? It made me feel like you chose the subject not in the spirit of trying to sum up the content of your thread in one sentence, but to provoke reaction. And I've felt the same way before. Its not bothersome in itself, but sometimes you had several threads going at the same time, with a great many of them titled in the same passive aggressive manner.

I don't find peakoil.com an online community where differing views are not allowed - I've seen my share of those. So I think that when you try to position yourself in martyrdom, of having your view and/or message attacked, you are fighting a straw man. I compliment your effort on trying to "shine a beacon of light in these dark times", but your provocative manner of doing so is apprehensive to people, as you have undoubtedly noticed. You're overreaching.

I think that if you would have gone about presenting your counterview argument and articles in a more civil manner you wouldn't have faced hostility.

Yes I take your point but you must also realise that the title of the news article in question is "North Sea to last 100 years". Then I expressed my view on the content of the article in my next post. I said that I didn't think that Dr Pike had the view of what was expressed in the title. I made 3 links to his public statement. He did not say that in any of those press releases. Do you think I should change the titles of news articles that people here think are offensive? Who's over-reacting here? Wouldn't it be better just to read the article first and comment in a civilised manner on the content instead of abusing the messager? Your last sentence states exactly what I did.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Graeme', 'I')f you keep merging threads, then the site will become ridiculous.

On the contrary. It will be a better site in every way.

Take a look at the comments, Graeme. Look how people feel about you and your postings.

Why you continue to post material that is broadly unappreciated is a wonder. I suppose it is primarily to cause emotional responses from others.

Jack, I've just discovered that OilFinder2 posted a similar story to mine entitled "Oil shortage a Myth".

http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic41136.html

Did he get abused? No. In fact there is quite a long discussion about the same topic I also posted. Did his thread get merged with mine? No.

Aaron used to post objections to stories I posted about hydrogen and fuel cells. Now you see this type of story posted all over the board. Do these people get abused. No.

How about some balanced, mature moderating. Better still, as a moderator you could ignore what you think is provocative and let the members comment on threads posted.

Drifter, You are contradicting yourself. First you say that I'm preaching to others, then you say I don't comment on the articles I post! Which is it? Actually, it's mostly the latter until recently. I have contributed to other threads apart from my own.

I will cut down on the number of articles I post in this forum. I will be more selective. I've already started submitting news stories for publication on the front page. All of the future tech stories will get posted in the appropriate thread. The remainder will be single threads mostly about oil. Remember I used to be a News Editor. I'm still looking for news stories hence the reason I'm posting mainly in this forum. I post at work so usually I don't have time to comment on the content. I hoped it was self explanatory. Clearly it is not.

If you look back a few posts in this thread to my reply to AP, you will see my present position on Peak Oil - peak oil is near. But it may shift as I get new information.
