It's a lot like eating celery...

Unread postby hope_full » Wed 11 Jun 2008, 10:10:47

As part of my "get ready" list, I'm now doing one-hour bike rides each morning at 5:30. I'm 25 pounds too fluffy and I've decided that come what may, I *am* going to live to be an old woman and I'd better get this body in shape for a fuel-less society.

Sunday morning, I was riding my bike in another neighborhood and I saw a young, overweight black man (probably 75 pounds too heavy) getting out of the biggest SUV I've ever seen. I thought it was a Hummer, but when I got closer, I saw it was another brand.

He got out of the SUV and had two newspapers in each hand. He flung the papers on the front lawn of these typical suburban homes with their 100 by 150 foot lots and then went on to the next homes.

The guy was delivering NEWSPAPERS in an SUV, a NEW SUV. Yeesh. And watching this I thought, "It's a lot like eating celery. There's a negative net gain because it takes more energy to eat celery than it provides to the body."

I wish I'd had a camera. It was almost unbelievable.

Heh

When I explained Peak Oil to my sister and the fact that at some point it will take more energy to get oil out of the ground than we get from the oil itself she said

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')o Peak Oil is a bit like eating celery

weird huh?

Some just haven't gotten it yet, assuming this is "just another cycle" or that the "speculation bubble" is about the burst and prices will get back to "normal". So this person might be in pre-denial, as they may not yet heard of PO yet. Odd, though, that this person was delivering newspapers; he might just be out of a job and trying to do anything to make money. The ROI of SUV depreciation(is there such a thing anymore?) and gas costs to paper route income is likely negative, though.

Great story HF.

Absolutely great.

Ignorance, sloth, avarice . . . all nicely packaged.
Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

I always wonder from where the real money is coming when I see someone living beyond their apparent means. He could be dealing drugs on the side, or he could be mooching off a sugar mama. Perhaps he's living at home and dad got sick of him sitting around playing video games and told him he had 30 minutes to get a job or he'd be kicked out. He's got to be smart enough to realize it's a losing proposition; there must be something hidden from view.

My husband and I both got a good laugh and then an, "oh geez. How sad." out of that.
I bicycle to work in the morning, in our small town. I'm lucky bc there are never any cars out. I leave at 4:30 am-it takes me about 10 min., not an hour though. I work in a cafe, and do all the prep work before we open and I love it. I love bicycling home in the mornings along the river here, having been up all morning. It feels so good!
Maybe this guy will start cycling or walking! We can only hope. Good luck to you in your endevour to be healthier!

the grocery where I work; the propane guy yesterday said it takes over 900 dollars to fill the tank on his truck now. While he's inside doing paperwork the truck is outside running. Said why don't you turn it off? Takes too long for the cab to get cool again.

Running air conditioning in the first place kills mileage. Better to leave it off and open a window a fraction while moving, the extra drag is nowhere near as bad. But I suppose that never occured to him either.

At low to moderate speeds this is true. At high speeds the drag is worse than running the AC. I don't know what you mean by a "fraction" but it has to be open a good bit before it's going to cool you off obviously.

The recent studies that I have read on this say that in the end it works out the same either way. I just use my windows, AC gives me a headache.
