I've been guilty of saying "so it begins" on here a few times myself, although I haven't used that for a thread title before.
For me, it "began" in Sept of 2004, when I saw every gas station in my region (south Florida) run out of gas...every last single one. And this lasted for days and days. Same thing with the grocery stores...day after day of no food coming in = empty shelves. There were no shootings, no riots, no queues with fights breaking out...just a whole lot of nothing doin'.
Granted, this episode lasted less than a week, but what if it went on for another week? A full month? Three months? Think about that a few moments. You have your "thin blue line"...our police forces that keep the criminals from destroying everything. You have the "thin green line" that keeps all of Mexico from invading the US. And then you have the other kind of thin line...the line that separates us from living life as we are now to...um, like nothing. The day the gas stations run out and never get refilled, the day that the power goes out and never gets turned back on, the day that the TV goes black for good, is the day modern civilization ends. And the line that separates us from total doomsday is indeed very, very thin...thinner than just about anyone out there is willing to admit. Granted, that day is probably still a long ways off, but having experienced a taste of that...well, it's something I ponder about a lot.
In the meantime, as the thin veneer of our consumerist society wears off under the corrosive forces of extremely high energy costs, I do concur with Jack...there is a huge volcano of pent-up anger that's going to explode like Krakatoa. When that time comes, it's Katy bar the door time. The riots and burning probably won't last very long, perhaps just a few short days, but it'll change the face of the world forever...and God only knows what will become of us afterwards.
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...
...and the meek shall inherit the Earth!
