Police: Things get ugly at California gas pumps

Police say a doctor confronted another driver with tire iron for jumping line at gas pumps

Violence broke out at the gas pumps in Orange County. Police say a La Palma doctor waiting in line to buy gas at the Costco warehouse store in Cypress grabbed a tire iron and confronted a motorist who cut into the line.

Sgt. Tom Bruce said the doctor was arrested and booked for investigation of brandishing a deadly weapon in a rude, angry or threatening manner, a misdemeanor.

Witnesses told police the doctor was in line at the pumps Monday evening when another vehicle cut in front of him. When the doctor confronted the motorist with a tire iron, the other driver locked himself in his car and called police.

That is nothing. Just wait until there are actually murders at the pumps committed by people with no criminal backgrounds. That is when it really begins. People feel they are entitled to their gas and when they are denied some ugly things are going to happen.

I'm gonna agree with Jack here, not the specifics of that particular event but just that things are getting tough here in the Rich world or so we think.
Saw a story about a food distribution at a church in the south somewhere a few weeks ago. The line was a hundred or more people long waiting to load up a box or two with free food.

I have no doubt those people were trying to get a little relief from the economic strain trying to maintain their lives and the few interviewed talked about layoffs, hungry kids and the rising costs of about everything.

But the thing that struck me was 90% were overweight and maybe half were perhaps twice as big as a healthy person.

Fat people in a food line isn't a good sign I'm thinking.

{sorry, I left out a key word}

Soon we will hit peak obesity.

then we know the economy is downsizing.

Keeping food away from a fat person is extremely dangerous.

Gas lines get ugly in California: so it begins?

A doctor in Orange County, California (USA) arrested today for threatening someone who cut in front of him in a gas line.

Do you think this is isolated, or just the beginning?

I have seen lines at gas stations at Costco even when gas was $2/gallon and less.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tiberius', 'D')o you think this is isolated, or just the beginning?

both !
we haven't had a return of lines the way they were in the 70's. so, for this year, i'd say it's isolated.

but, if by "just the beginning" you mean - there's going to be more of it in the next few years - i think that's a safe estimation.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')hades of things to come?

Shades of the past. Hostility at the pump was common during the 1973 Oil Crisis. We cn expect to see more of this.

I find this of particular interest because doctors are usually in the upper strata of society, both socially and economically. It is rather unusual to see such a strong reaction - especially since there are not shortages at this time.

In Texas - Florida too, as I recall - if one feels threatened, they can use deadly force. So some day soon, we'll see an angry motorist pick up a tire iron and the other motorist will terminate him, quite legally.

This is merely the leading edge of the coming festivities.

So - what happens when there are real, chronic, substantial shortages? What happens if there is rationing, and someone wants more?

I leave it to your no doubt fecund imagination.

But the above scenario is part of why I'm a doomer.

Yes. When people start killing people over this, and it's just a matter of time before the first fatality, it's not gonna be a pretty picture. There was something about this in the New York Times today, over at the Dot Earth blog there.

I would have slashed his tires and left quickly!(this happened only about 10 miles from where I live) But of course I don't use enough gas to have to stand in line at Cosco fighting over it.

I ride my bicycle to work and to get groceries.

I'm sure people are more agitated than normal but we're not seeing actual gas shortages yet so I don't know what real cause anyone would have to be in a rush to buy $4.50 a gallon gas.
