Is anyone else ready to strangle the MSM?

Unread postby charliebrownout » Mon 09 Jun 2008, 19:38:24

Seriously, when oil is going up they flail and talk about the oil crisis. The next day it goes down a buck or three and they give an all clear and a search result for "oil news" turns up news that oil has "fallen", "slipped", "tumbled", "dipped"...then everyone acts surprised the next day when it starts going back up again with a "surge", "jump", "rise", "leap"...

It goes up and people start accepting that things might need to change (sort of) then they go down and everyone seems to take this big sigh of relief and say "well, that sure was scary...I thought for a minute we should actually do something!"

What is the psychology of the market and the media? Schizoid?

It's a bird! It's a bubble! It's a Super Surge! Weeeeeeeeeeee!

It's like "the sky is falling the sky is falling! What will we do when the sky falls?" then "ooh, something shiny" and back to usual then another round of "the sky is falling"....

WTF?

Meanwhile, other parts of the news media are too busy picking apart the champaign trail errr....I mean campaign trail...trying to figure out if Barack bumped, punched, or thumped or dapped or whatever his wife's fist...or if McCain really is old....

Gahh.....

This world is nucking futts!

There is no need forthe media to go into mass panic.
That won't help anyone.
I do feel the media does not focus enough on energy progression and the crisis.
The media should use its influence to get people to be more effecient and resourceful. Help people with gardening and local supply. I dont believe there is going to be this end of society so I think freaking out isn't going to help.
Oil is a fossil-fuel, it will run out but we do have other alternatives to at the least supply society with things like electricity, medical care, clean water, and some transportation.
The oil markets will hit a ceiling. If no one is buying their oil because it is too expensive they will HAVE to bring it down to make any profit, PO or no PO.
The media isnt really focused on reality or even world wide matters as much as it is what is happening now. People are sick of Bush and are desperate for a new president and do care about energy problems but many feel new leadership will cure that.
Trust me, the media will focus on it when suburbs start becoming ghost towns and people flee downtown for a realistic lifestyle and when gas is 8 bucks a gallon or like in Europe, ten bucks.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say that they should panic. It just seems like, when they talk about anything it is usually one extreme or the other...jumps. leaps and surges OR slips, dips, and falls

There must be a guy in the studio who sees the oil go up and shouts "QUICK get the Oil Crisis logo up STAT!" Or at least the one at CNBC anyway..."Okay, it's back down. Take that off of there. Let's talk about something else til' next time."

Then, over at CNN in there must be a similar guy in charge of missing white girls, bad weather, and possible political gaffes.

I just wish there was something real and noticable going on in our newsoutlets w/ people talking honestly about solving problems.

I agree, though, they might actually start to put real content on the news when they can't ignore reality any longer. I'm just wondering out loud how much longer that will be.

Man, I gave up on TV many years ago. All you need to do is watch ads for 5 minutes and you'll know why the MSM is schizoid on the topic of oil. Half the ads are for cars and trucks.

They want to believe. It's their jobs on the line. These prices *must* fall, or they might lose their jobs. Or worse, they might not be able to afford their lattes!

What do you consider MSM ? Just the cable talking heads?

If you include print journalists then still you find frustration, but many are pretty good.

I like to participate in the Washington Post chats and did so today. The Political chat today was hosted by the super cute Shailagh Murray, but she also seems to get it. She only took one of mine today and gave a very short answer ->

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Arlington, Va.: Shailagh says: "But I did once cover serious matters."

That's pretty funny, but we need you (and all of your compadres) to get back to serious matters ASAP. We are going through a severe case of cognitive dissonance as the worldview and future expectations of the general populace are coming into question. How would this country deal with real year-over-year declines in the amount of oil that is available to us? It's a bit scary when you think about it...

Shailagh Murray: Amen Arlington.

You've got to remember that the TV news folks are just salesmen and saleswomen, they are not reporters. The TV news is all about ratings, and thus income, it is not about news.

That is why they take a 0.01% change in the DOW or the oil price and treat it like a 10% move. It is all about salesmanship. If you don't think so, watch the body language and facial expressions of the TV folks on a slow news day when they have to try to sell a weak story. Comical to say the least.

Yes for alot of reasons-if I have to watch that poor 70 some year old man run over by that car in CT again, I would like to scream (probably wont right now because my 4 year old is asleep now). MSM pretty much says what they think you are suppose to know about the "oil crisis". That's why I hope that more people that are workers in the energy fields that see whats actually happening will join this site and give everybody some real life input. I guess I'll watch the weather channel tonight to see if my garden is going to get any rain soon. I watered it tonight hoping it would bring the rain-its kinda the same concept of washing your car, it tends to bring the rain.

I stopped watching TV 4 years ago... and since that day I know much more about what's really happening around.
Denial 101 = TV news ... and even if they start screaming about peak oil... 99% won't understand what that implies, or you suppose that all the people are smart like you and others around here to understand how the things work.
Get over it.

Yes, there is a limit on the price of oil, but probably not within most people's personal grasp. As an individual consumer you are the "low man." Right now there is a huge surge of price spike that's being held (and built up) in the transportation layer of the system. When repricing happens - you will pay the bill for that 10,20, 30 cents a time while the haulers continue to buy fuel in mass quantities. Eat or drive? Eat, but you also pay for the hauler's increased expense. The price of oil rises but even though you can't afford it anymore, it keeps selling because the cost of your oil consumption has been absorbed into the products you consume. Your consumption is still there, more or less, albeit reduced, but there, and you're still paying for it. Just in a different medium. This will continue with your military and government as the ultimate consumer. As long as there is oil, they will buy it, with your tax dollars, for whatever price they have to pay. If you don't pay, they'll do something bad to you.

I was lumping dead trees media in with the talking heads. At least a little bit. I know it is unfair because the dead trees always do a better job (overall). I think they know they can't sell as much BS as the talking heads can--they have a totally different audience.

I'd like to chuck the TV out the window. I'm still trying to talk my husband out of having cable. I really don't see a reason for the expenditure. We don't watch it very much and when we do only one or two channels. It's a waste, but old habbits die hard.
