According to the weekly USpetroleum report released by the EIA just now, U.S. demand for gasoline was down .4% over the past 4 weeks, compared to last year. This does not support CNNs claims.

"Total products supplied over the last four-week period has averaged nearly 20.5
million barrels per day, down by 0.7 percent compared to the similar period last
year. Over the last four weeks, motor gasoline demand has averaged 9.3 million
barrels per day, down by 0.4 percent from the same period last year. Distillate
fuel demand has averaged 4.1 million barrels per day over the last four weeks,
up 1.2 percent from the same period last year. Jet fuel demand is 2.9 percent
lower over the last four weeks compared to the same four-week period last year."

This from Green Car Congress:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')mericans drove less in March 2008, continuing a trend that began in November 2007, according to estimates recently published by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The FHWA’s Traffic Volume Trends report, produced monthly since 1942, shows that estimated vehicle miles traveled (VMT) on all US public roads for March 2008 fell 4.3% as compared with March 2007 travel. This is the first time estimated March travel on public roads fell since 1979. At 11 billion miles less in March 2008 than in the previous March, this is the sharpest yearly drop for any month in FHWA history.

Although February 2008 showed a modest 1 billion mile increase over February 2007, cumulative VMT has fallen by 17.3 billion miles since November 2006. Total VMT in the United States for 2006, the most recent year for which such data are available, topped 3 trillion miles.

Ack, host at ImageShack or the like, can't read any of the dates and TOD pages are notoriously slow loading.

Google Images for "vehicle miles travelled" and you'll get heaps o' hits. I like this one:

Apparently I'm not the only one who sees this. GM is going to dump the Hummer after concluding that "a market shift to smaller vehicles is permanent."

I wish there was more recent data than 2004 for this stat, and even better, from 2006 on. If there were, we would be able to figure out the efficiency of the fleet after the big increase in ethanol usage.

Had an amusing thought just now: if ethanol creates enough extra smog, it can act as another culprit for tankers not making it into Houston...

Here's the EIA doc on states in which there are bans on MTBE (PDF), if that's of assistance. Ubiquitous except for NJ, usually in .5% formulation.

And here's fuel economy of various flex-fuel vehicles. And from that page: We have revised the 1985-2007 MPG estimates to make them comparable to the new 2008 MPG estimates!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')PA has changed the way it estimates MPG.

Starting in model year 2008, estimates will reflect the effects of

* Faster Speeds & Acceleration
* Air Conditioner Use
* Colder Outside Temperatures

The tests lower MPG estimates for most vehicles.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'T')hat 'Reapers Hook' (nice one, dude) has no apparent reasonable cause (other than . . . ). Not like the Motor Fuel Consumption drop in the late 1970's early 80's caused by Iraq/Iran War, previous embargo etc.

No. That 'Reapers Hook' can only be explained by one thing. It's a 'Peak Reaper's Hook.' We got Peak Reaper now.

Can't be explained by anything?

How much oil were 3rd world countries using in the late 70's and early 80's?
