$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('joelcolorado', 'I') would never want to make that decision its just an observation. As health care has gotten better, we are doing heart bypasses on 95 year old persons which cost $500,000. And they have collected social security or pensions for 30 years or more.
Its just a strain on society that has happened. I understand your point and want ppl to live as long as they are productive and happy too.

But what would you do under the circumstances? Or isn't this an issue you feel you will ever need to face? Do you have no aging or ill relatives? No aging or ill friends?

I worry about it a lot, because this isn't just "ppl" I'm talking about, it is my closest family members.

What to do? I try to imagine caring for them, and I don't think I will be able to do it, as I will be likely quite ill myself. But I must think about it, and try to prepare. How will I care for someone who can't get out of bed, bathe, eat, or care for themselves in any way?

I have no idea. Its a definite problem everywhere. Years ago, ppl used to have elderly at home as there were not nursing homes. That is a real burden for sure.

I dont know. Scary. My friend who lived to 87 said he had a plan. He would end his own life if he ever got that bad. NOT AN ANSWER, just HIS answer.
Wow, that takes nerve and determination.
Some ppl are like that tho.
My father inlaw wanted to die and so did. Just gave up and died in two hours.
Dont know

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e will go back to where we were 30 years ago where the lifespan was like 66 years. People live a long time now due to medicine and healthcare.

Just visted Grampa's grave site memorial day.

Born 1896
Died 1980

Raised 13 kids during the great depression too with no work.

My other Grampa worked in the iron ore mines, smoked 7 packs of camel straights every day and lived to 78.

You're full of BS.

It would be really sad if our societies turned savage against the old and sick. It's really a moral issue, whether we want to be humans or rabid wolves to each other.

As TPTB try to save social security & medicare by taxing the working age to death (imagine FICA at 35%), I wouldn't be at all surprized to see an age war begin (young against old).

Funny thing is that the old are probably much better armed.

Yeah, that's the one war we don't have yet. We have wars over values, culture wars, gender wars, race wars, religious wars, class wars, ideological wars... The list just wouldn't be complete without an age war, would it ?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ludi', 'H')ow would you, joel, decide what to do with ill people who can't care for themselves? What would you do?

Doesn't it depend on the ill person and the state of the medical world?
I mean, if the ill person is able to, they should be the one to decide what they would like to have done/accomplished/dealt with.
If they are so bad off that they are no longer aware of the world around them, I say make them comfortable and let them go.
There are an awful lot of variables in decisions such as these. Right now, the medical world is still available for most. It is conceivable(sp?) that the medications that are now available for most will not be there in the years to come.

Those who have no choice but to depend on others will have problems:
"U.S. woman dies in iron lung after power failure
Family says polio victim spent 50 years in the 750-pound machine
Dianne Odell, 61, had been confined to the 7-foot-long machine since she was stricken by polio at 3 years old. …
Thirty-five polio survivors in the U.S. still use iron lungs, according to the Post-Polio Health International Agency. …"

My wife has the hardest time trying to write prescriptions for ppl that they can afford such as the $4 at walmart. So much of what ppl need is not available there. I dont know WHY..

She has a 8 page list to consult trying to make it work. Some docs just dont care and write without thinking.

Ask your doctor for Walmart $4 scripts if you can. I have a great plan with copay but cheaper for me at walmart for what I take. Go figure.

But dont give Walmart or Walgreens your insurance info on the $4 meds as they charge them and pocketthe rest and...then you will be in trouble on medicare as you will get to the donut hole faster than you should have and have to pay it all then. ITS A SCAM
imagine that?

What if they are aware but unable to make decisions? (examples my sister and my step-aunt). What if they don't conveniently "go"? Or by "make them comfortable" do you mean "care for them for the rest of their lives" which could be months or years?

As for me I will not let that happen to me if i have my faculties toward the end and have signed papers to that affect already. Every person should do that for their children.

Its only death of this body after all. We will live forever.
We shall behold Him then in all of His Glory.
So be ready and do the right thing for your family and sign the papers to that affect. Give someone you trust power of attorney over your medical care so you dont live in a nursing home as a vegetable.

I'm thinking in the low-energy future there won't be nursing homes for any but the extremely wealthy.

That is a possiblity. I think ppl will have some hard times for sure. They had poor farms in the pre nursing home days. Maybe we go back to that.
