$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')o be ready and do the right thing for your family and sign the papers to that affect. Give someone you trust power of attorney over your medical care so you dont live in a nursing home as a vegetable.

Who's gonna take care of them then? Santa Claus?

I bet the majory of peeps here are lucky to even see their parents once a Month.

Hello,
I am new here. But I am not new to the subject. I get very frustrated when I mention peak oil to someone, and they start telling me about all the new oil finds everywhere. I don't know what to say to them.
Any one-liners?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ludi', 'W')hat if they are aware but unable to make decisions? (examples my sister and my step-aunt). What if they don't conveniently "go"? Or by "make them comfortable" do you mean "care for them for the rest of their lives" which could be months or years?

I am not quite sure, Ludi. There are just so many variables. Everything from a wide number of resources available now to the worst case scenario-nothing at all available.
If they are aware but unable to make decisions, one choice would be to make the decisions for them. This can be done within the family unit, or by legal means.
I am not comfortable with euthansia of those who are aware but cannot make the choice for themselves.
I think a person who is in control of their mental facilities should have the legal right to make such a decision for themselves.
As for comfortable, I mean to reduce as much pain as is possible.
Care for them for the rest of their lives: This is not an easy task. It is pretty much a 24/7 job. I don't remember the laws regarding this (I worked in nursing homes for years before I was married.)
Decisions such as this can be decided subjectively or objectively.
I think each case must be decided on a case by case basis.

I agree. For many of us, these "cases" will be ourselves or close family members.

But what of those who have no family? :(

Johannah, this place is full of witty people. I would suggest you do a bit more reading on the different forums. You will develop your own one-liners. But, I am afraid you will be wasting your time for quite some time to come-the majority do not want to know. How do you see PO affecting the old and the poor?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Byron100', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Plantagenet', 'T')he stupid, weak and sick will also die in disproportionate numbers in a tragic and unneccessary demonstration of Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection

That may very well be true, but I can't wait to see the results of democracy in action as these groups exercise their right to vote and take from those who have more than they do...now, that's something I can't wait to see....hehe.

You really believe in democracy? :-D

So for whom would you vote?
1. Hillary?
2. Obama?
3. Al Gore?
4. Kerry?

They are all the same. :-D

Democracy is an illusion, which is meant to keep mobs obedient.

Voting,
well i dont think any of them care honestly or are bought off by the corporations as they think things will just keep going on and on as they are now.

Or so insulated from the real world, they dont get it. The privileged never do suffer so they dont have to care.

I think Hillary has the smarts to do the job. Obama has no experience so is scary as the world is a scary place for the USA now. I dont like the Clintons one bit tho.

I think you have to look at the world and vote accordingly. NONE of them will help us but who can handle a crisis and be tough with our enemies. I will not vote for the democrats until they return to the center. However if you have to ahve one, Hillary is the smartest for sure and could back a bear out of a cave if cornered. At least with Iran she shows she has backbone.

People dont get it. A limited nuclear exhcange over there will cause death and destruction worldwide with the ash and fallout and the economic collapse. Israel or the USA will turn Iran into glass if they so much as twitch and that is scary. but what else do you do. They can reach Europe with their missles and the day will come soon that Iran will tell the world to either bow or be bombed. THEY ARE CRAZY. You cannot reason with that.

Dont turn this into a political thing tho, please

(NORTHBROOK, IL, May 5, 2008)—In an unprecedented initiative, US and Canadian experts have developed a comprehensive framework to optimize and manage critical care resources during times of pandemic outbreaks or other mass critical care disasters. The new proposal suggests legally protecting clinicians who follow accepted protocols for the allocation of scarce resources when providing care during mass critical care events......Palliative care for all patients will be a priority. However, patients will be ineligible for scarce critical care interventions if they have extreme organ failure and/or severe chronic illness with a short life expectancy.

Looks like mr. government and mr. doctor will be making the tough calls.

Thats interesting. Remember Katrina and the nursing homes. and hospitals that had to make choices in the face of calamity?

Those people got critized and prosecuted I suppose for making life and death decisions when there was no other choice by people lving in town homes in Manhattan and L.A. with their Rolex watches and Mercedes etc.

Unless you stand in water up to your knees and try and care for patients, can you apprec the hardship. In running battles, we had to make the same decisions to either leave people behind or lose the entire squad. So you see, its not like going to work at the factory or at the office and making that choice.

I feel sorry for ppl who have to do that. My wife faces people dying every day and the sadness and grief she bears is unfair. She saves a lot sure, but you never get over the ones you lose.

So legislation is needed to protect them from prosecution in times when the rules are thrown out. Otherwise the health care ppl will not help. I know in some states, if we came upon a wreck, my wife might not stop and help due to lawsuits and liability. How sad is THAT> But cant blame her.

Some states the docs hold NOTHING in their names. Have corps and other ways to keep from losing personal property to lawsuit happy ppl.

Look, some times people just die. You cant save them all and often, one treatment that works for me wont for you and its just the way the human body is. We dont know that much.

But ppl think the docs should be faultess. I dont know anyone in any job who doesnt make mistakes. Do YOU>>

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('joelcolorado', 'B')ut ppl think the docs should be faultess. I dont know anyone in any job who doesnt make mistakes. Do YOU>>

That will not last for long.

Mother Nature will deal with that faultless culture and finish it off in due time.

You have a good chance to live and see it.

Risk aversion, quest for safety and stability, insistence to keep status quo regardless and other similar traits are major reasons of impending collapse of American Empire and Western civilization in general.

BTW, few years ago British Medical Association removed concept of accident as a reason of someones health problem.
So there are no accidents.
It is always someone's fault.
This someone could be your wife. :-D

I think, it is unwise to be a doctor these days... and if you are you should keep your knowledge and skill for yourself and immediate family.
Society is not fit to have doctors these days.

Yeah well when you have a heart attack or get sick I bet you go to the doctor. An attorney I know is always saying doctors kill people but he had chest pains and I noticed the ambulance at his door at midnight. Depends on whose ox is being gored doesnt it.

If you dont ever need a doc, good for you, but some people cannot live without one.

Unfortunately some people have developed that poor attitude against doctors (I agree that some doctors do deserve a bad rap, but not all). Practicing in the US is difficult at times. I definitely pray every day not just for my practice, but for my patients and for wisdom in making decisions. If I was younger, negligble student loan debt, no husband and three kids, dog, etc, etc, I would definitely be working with Doctors without Borders or other perhaps short term missions through our church. I have been in several children orphanages in Russia and have treated medically Russian orphans. It would break your heart the condition children have to live. Unfortunately we have it here in this country and we are without excuse here with our wealth. We are very spoiled in this country. Again, its really scarey how people will react as their expected standard of living drops in this country. Some of my families now are finding it difficult to travel to some specialty appts 1 hour away because the cost of gas. Several times we have had to reschedule specialist appts until after the parents payday so they can purchase gas for the trip-and this is probably the tip of the iceburg with the gas cost. I may have to get the amish to quote me a price to build a buggy and put my pasture potato horses to work-I could be like Dr. Quinn medicine woman. Unfortunately my nurse is terrified of horses...

And the doctors treated the attorney.

You, know, attorneys kill people too.

Get them off drug raps and they go overdose if they were in jail they would live.

Get them off DUI raps and they run into a family car with kids and everyone dies.

Attorneys killed 800,000 in iraq, by starting the war there.
yep, those white house guys are attornies.

There was a story in Floricdda, an attorney had a brain tumor and no neuro surgeon would see him.
(Neurosurgeons suck it hard with insurance)
