Three pieces of advice:

1. Have one child only;

2. For the sake of your unborn child consider moving to Australia; I’ve heard Tasmania is a fine place;

3. Ignore all advice on this issue that you find on the forum (i.e. do what you feel you have to).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('zensui', 'N')ot now. Maybe after TSHTF, and only if you survived and think your offspring will not live in pain.

I agree. Best to wait until you see light at the end of the tunnel.

I can't think of any reason why I'd want to do this either personally or thinking about it in a broader species-oriented sense.

Our generation will be the last one that gets to partake in the "party" and decline is all we have in our current societies' future. I don't see how an even larger next generation is going to do anything but further corrode our chances of having a quality life from here on out.

We've absolutely got to control our numbers if we're going to make it. If our population were 1/8 to 1/10 of what it is now - a figure more in line with sustainable human life - peak oil would be an issue much further into the future.

Personally, I don't see why I'd want the liability. I can barely take care of myself and my future is already shaky enough!

Since yesterday the poll has taken a slide toward the negative, 57% of people have now voted not to have children at all. I know this forum is home to many doomers but even here this level of negativity on such a fundamental issue as procreation is somewhat disturbing.

Yes, have your kids soon - while there is still the miracles of modern medicine, if needed. All bets are off for the future!

There is never a great time to have kids - there is always something wrong. There is never a bad time to have kids - children are a blessing.

There is always some fear, regardless of when you are having kids, I am sure. Work on a good support system and go for it!

I expect contraceptives to be pretty expensive or unavailable after PO, so mere practicing will get a little problematic then.

Humans are animals. Animals are tough. Look around you at all the other animals. What do they need to survive? The same as us. Food water and warm shelter. You know the shit about people living on $1 or $2 per day? Well they have been ALL THEIR LIFE! Some live to 60 or 70. How they do it is that most people never need major medical care. Most people just get sustenance and stay warm and live day after day year after year.
The reason the first world countries are going to go to shit is because we have created these insane societies where we have these 1000 or more other things that we think we need. Face it, if you had no way to travel, just lived in your location for the rest of your life but had food water and a house that was warm/cool enough, u would live until u were 100, unless disease or injury killed you.
That is the definition of 'sustainable'. The major issue regarding peak oil is the UNSUSTAINABILITY of our modern society. Its awesome in terms of way over the top living standards, but it cant go on much longer. To believe in PO is to realize this.

To have a kid now?
Pro: get the amazing health services while they are available
Con: a young child will be major "baggage" should the shit actually one day hit the fan. Which is what appears to be slowly evolving.

In an ideal world, we'd all be encouraged to procreate consistent with our desires, resources, and abilities. However, in a post-PO world, with resources becoming increasingly scarce, we will no longer have that luxury.

Alot of our ancestors started families with bad times imminent. In fact, bad times are almost always imminent. Today it is the end of oil, yesterday it was soviet nukes. Tomorrow it will be rising oceans.

True but having children during the cold war didn't increase the number of nuclear warheads in the world or the likelihood of their being used whereas having children now will increase the severity of the ecological crisis. If you don't give a toss, you don't give a toss but if you think that the ecological crisis can and should be addressed, having children is at least morally suspect.

makes me wonder how many of those snip-preachers snipped themselves? And don't have any kids?
All I will say is that world is overpopulated with other kids, and never with yours. Sacrifice my own child ( either third or a fourth ) so a few people [EDITED](Negroids) in Haiti can buy rice for their 11th? Right. Dream on.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Moped', 'G')ood opinion on this issue. Choosing not to procreate is equal to genetic suicide, whereas procreation is arguably the only reason to exist. I think of the thousands of generations of ancestry that came before me, had any one of those generations had failed to breed, the genetic line would have been broken and I would not be alive to experience the ride today. On the other hand one of the virtues of being human is that we can choose not to procreate, even if that means our own hardship in old age, that would be better than helplessly watching your own children or grandchildren die in agonising pain, or suffer under tirany, or die for tha lack of clean water, or adequate shelter, or simply starve to death which is almost now a certainty for a portion of the current population.

There's no purpose on having offspring that will most probably die painfuly at a very young age, not even a genetical purpose. But, surviving by "keeping light" (having no humans depending on you) and then having offspring is genetical (and memetical?) genius (also because of surviving a die-off).

I don't need a snip. I'm basically asexual for 99% of the time, I don't "need sex". And if I'm aroused by some girl, I just remember her later in a warm night and "enjoy myself". :lol: No need to waste the money I don't have on a useless (to me) operation.

Also, if I'm damn lucky and become part of the ~10% of survivors, and the girls surviving are kind, compassionate and fuckable... I will regret being "sniped" when there's no f* hospital to become "unsniped". :lol: I will like to have babies, but not in overshoot.
