$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')hairman Mao decided that sparrows were vermin and everybody was to get them: open season on sparrows, in months, millions were killed and the sparrows in China brought to the verge of extinction.

The pests that would have been eaten by the sparrows multiplied, ate the crops...and a famine killed millions of people.

Or maybe it could have been the incredibly incompetant economic planning that held that moving people off of farms without productivity increases into industry was doable.

No, I guess it must just be the sparrow.

I don't care about the birds. But I do care about maintaining civilization and without cheap energy, this civilization is going down.

Dezakin, Your understanding of the peak oil issue, and support for ideas of a comp. expert seems to flow from a limited understanding of the eco-sphere. Relying on a computer whiz to assess a subject that requires broad general knowledge and depth of understanding, is a huge mistake.

I'm sorry, what am I misunderstanding about peak oil? Check my position on the issue, and please detail where I'm misunderstanding.

As to ecology, I would love to hear arguments that arent anecdotes illustrating why humanity is dependant on biodiversity rather than crops and energy.

Scientifically, their position seems to be this, and it is falsifiable: Any closed and sealed ecology (like Bios-3, or Biosphere 2), comprised of a limited selection of species, and cycling in isolation from the general ecosphere, will die.

John Denver, Bingo!

Dezekin--BTW, what's wrong with anecdotal evidence, anyway? We live by a flimsy sets of assumptions that are damned near impossible to prove or disprove, but there's plenty of "anecdotal" evidence that those assumption support a status quo that is pro coroporate, pro govt, and ultimately anti human.

pstar:$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his IS Trekkie talk . Monsanto couldn’t even engineer a tomato that tasted good and you are going to engineer self pollinating blueberries, cherries, pumpkins, cashew nuts, etc. crops all showing reduced productivity due to pollinator decline.

I'll think about that as every year we have higher crop yields and how much I enjoy brocolli.

Did you read that last link? Crop yields dropping, world grain supplies at thirty year low. Now if you say something like, "so what" or "good" then I'll know where you are coming from.

Self pollination is something that nerd agronomists, who can't get a date, would come up with. All that talk of anthers, stamens and pistils can get a guy pretty worked up.

But that's beside the point. The links about food shortages ARE very scary.

It’s just that the way we have been abusing the planet. The only reason we get the kind of crop yield we do is because of genetically modified food and petro-fertilizers. The day we run out of petro-fertilizers well there goes our food.

A agree with you it is sad but expected

What do you mean by petro-fertilizers? You think we can't synthesize them?

The falling crop yield debate has been addressed allready here:

http://www.stichting-han.nl/Commentaren ... ersion.doc

Crop yields have gone up, but the whole story is more suscinctly addressed.

This paper has citations to the FAO datasets.

Good link Dezakin. I encourage the doomers to read it with an open mind.

That was a bit sloppy maverickdoc, we all know that oil (and fertilizers) won't suddenly run out. Besides fertilizer can be made from any hydrogen feedstock, coal will work fine and is already used in parts of china. The amount needed is not huge. Offpeak electricity could also be used to produce hydrogen in sufficient amounts, put all those idling power plants to use (kill some streetlights if you really need to). I think the bigger issue is the large amount of oil used to transport food all over the place. The 3000 mile salad can and will go. Also keep in mind per capita grain production in developed countries averages 650kg per capita, and around 200kg in developing countries, due to meat consumption. We could loose a lot and not starve.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Dezakin', 'I')'m sorry, what exactly is false about John's assertions?

Oil is a concern only because of transportation. Its been readily demonstrated many times that theres enough recoverable nuclear fuel in the crust to last thousands of millinea.
