$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vision-master', 'A')round 2003 there was this really cool sport-touring website (motorcycles). We had a nice small group and had a lot of fun. I even went to the 1st ever National in the Black Hills. Within a couple of years the site had grown to the point where it started to suck and became unmanageable. Will the same thing happen here?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Drifter', 'I') have a feeling that the moderators are not going to look the other way as they did before regarding trolls posting on this forum. It's getting too crowded to ignore them.

From the general to the particular.

Imagine that two people live in an area the size of Alaska; one is on the Western side, the other resides on the Eastern side. Is there any need for laws regarding noise? Will anyone care if one of them decides to act strangely?

Now switch the question. If these two people each live in small apartments next to each other, and surrounded by thousands of others packed into a small space, will their individual acts grate on others? Will laws evolve to address these issues?

Same here. Crowding will have its effect. Now add in fear, panic, and anger - not only amongst the N00bs, but among most who find themselves immersed in an economic, social, and political environment that is degrading. Perhaps rapidly degrading. Moderation may well have to change its character. Please note that I say this as an individual, and merely as speculation.

We will have, in microcosm, the same problems we discuss with regard to the greater world. We will face a choice between anarchy and imposed order, or some middle path as yet undefined and undetermined.

Welcome to an interesting experiment.

On analogy that I read once was 'don't worry about buying an axe, when things go to hell and people start dieing, there will be axes around for you to pick up'

I'm thinking if I know what is going on, at least I'll distribute my fear over the decades before and after the peak rather then panicking at the first food riot on American soil.

I'm a cold war baby and used to have nightmares about 'The Big One' so I supposed I'm disposed to gloom and doom. And of course I'm hoping that we are all wrong and Kunstler is full of it, but I don't see how. I catch myself thinking, if society can just keep it together until 2014... (when my debt is paid off and my wife and I finish school) But I don't see things hanging on that long.

Today is a pretty wild day with this article out there mentioning the site, but if you want to talk about really good preps, plan for a variety of scenarios and possible futures.

No one really knows what will happen, but those who are able to adapt, have a good range of skills, and have emotional and psychological flexibility are probably going to do okay.

Oh come on Pstarr, we had to expect it would come to this at some point. The shit is hitting the wind machine, PANIC is a natural consequence. All your worries will come true to some extend or another. At best those who have thought through this will offer reasonable solutions, at worst, well we'll fight and bicker, sort of like we always do on this site.

Hello Johnny trash,
You asked if there was anything that you could do...well, for starters, meet up with some fellow Chicago PeakOilers. I've been trying off and on to get my fellow Chicagoans "PeakOil" friendly. I myself am a horticulturist and run garden centers here in Chicagoland. (You can see more about our centers in the "jobs" section of these forums).

Maybe I should have a Saturday afternoon PeakOil session at the garden centers...?..that would be a viable place to meet up at. We used to do them a few years back at a coffee place.

If anyone is interested, let me know. pm me.

Welcome.
Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

There is no point in giving up anything as long as it is available. This current 'guilt trip' of conservation is nothing but a bad vibe. After all we live and die the same way as our ancestors did.

Point is, don't get suckered in the cheap version of death, since it is the oldest Point of Sale!

I stayed in Kissimmee for what was probably my last vacation. It really is/was a nice place. I really missed out on visiting "Medieval Times?" (not sure of the exact name of the place.) I would have liked to see people beat each other senseless, while enjoying dinner.

I recently found this site, it has so much info.

A little about me is, I started working in the offshore oil industry in the early 80's after high school and again after college in the late 80's. I have always had a giant interest in the oil industry.
The past several years I was wondering about when oil would run out, I never heard the term peak oil until the last several weeks.

Basically,I figure oil is harder to extract and supplies will one day end with so many users. I am constantly discussing/arguing with people at work and in daily life explaining that oil is harder to get and that is one of the causes of the high prices. I get in return "NO, IT IS ALL THE ENVIROMENTALISTS FAULT". My feelings are that one day enviromentalists will be classified with other ISTS, Communists and Terrorists when the crap hits the fan.

I do have one giant question, and do not bite my head off. I read that oil supplies are endless and others say that peak oil is here,
like others I get contradictions all the time on this issue. In an endless endeavour to learn about this issue, I joined this site to learn all I can. THANK YOU.

Another point to remember regarding new viewers/posters...this site is "PeakOil.com." Not only does it regularly show up in the top five results from SE's, but, as the domain name industry would put it, "peakoil.com" is the "category-killer" domain name for this particular niche (peak oil). Regardless of content (which is extensive and generally of a high quality), this site will de facto be considered the main "Peak Oil" site on the internet because of its name/URL alone.

So, anyone who's got a beef with peak oil theory--maybe it doesn't fit in with their default worlfd view, etc--and needs to express their opinion on the matter will make PeakOil.com among their first must-post stops.

As we ride over the peak to the paradigm-shifting decline and "peak oil" becomes one of the most common terms in the English language, the traffic here will explode in an inverse of the decline slope.

The moderators will definitely have their hands full.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('doodlebug2', 'I') read that oil supplies are endless and others say that peak oil is here, like others I get contradictions all the time on this issue.

Supplies are clearly not endless. Some believe in "abiotic" oil formation (I don't), but even they can't point to any meaningful amount of oil formation over human- (as opposed to geologic-) scale times.

I suspect what you've sometimes heard from those who believe it's "endless" is that Peak Oil says that oil has almost run out? It hasn't. Other than perhaps a lunatic on the fringe or two, no peakist says that. What we think we're reaching is not the end of oil, it's the global maximum in oil production. Once production can never rise higher, yet demand wants more, we are in an era of rising prices and scarcity for those who can't afford it.

And it's often not clear what peak people are referring to. Is it light sweet crude? Probably reached that a few years back. Is it conventional crude? Probably there now. Is it "liquids" including natural gas condensates and tar sands "oil"? Maybe we're not there yet.

People who think that, were it not for environmentalists who prevent drilling everywhere, we'd have all the oil we ever need, are kidding themselves. We'll continue to find more oil, but chances are good we've already found most of the best large fields. Read Simmons' "Twilight in the Desert" for some good information on this (assuming you don't already know it all, grin).

You must know more than me, but I gotta say I think most would guess oil will run out at some point.

When the rising cost of energy impacts each of us is the open question and much more important than the little when of peak oil.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

New To The Site!

Unread postby checkmate » Sun 25 May 2008, 21:04:08

Hello everyone,

I am new to the site but not new at all to this conceptual form of thought. I knew several years ago that this country was on the wrong track and that impending problems where close at hand. We, (my wife and I) have been on a conservation kick for several years and have made large strides towards independent living and renewable energy. We have made several conversions to our home and are well on our way to being self-sufficient.

The bad news is that I can see (feel) a real storm brewing on a global level that I am not so sure that American can get out of. We have the problem of global resentment to us as a Country, our cultures, lifestyles, religions and scope of government. Yes, we are a superpower but when the world hates your guts, it puts a unique spin on future possibilities.

I am not paranoid, but I am realistic. Our foreign policy has been a self-centered joke for decades and as the old attage goes... What goes around, comes around. Yes, I do agree that our energy consumption and the reliance of foreign Oil is a real problem coupled with the fact that the "store got sold" a long time ago presents new challenges that I am not sure that the general population can (or is really prepared) to handle. We as individuals are the most spoiled people on the planet and this has made us lazy, indefferent and inable to accept the challenges that face this great nation.

Some will make it. many will not. Are you really prepared?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')make and run my cars on ethanol or hydrogen.

Welcome aboard - you have a lot to learn.

Start with this - running cars on ethanol is probably a loss of energy, and you will never run your car on hydrogen, because you'd need a really expensive fuel cell for that.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'r')emember Jericho on CBS?

No, I don't and so don't most members of this site, because we generally don't watch the tv - it's where they hand out the donkey shit.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 't')hat is what will happen I believe soon, if either Democrate is elected pres. the first thing to happen will be an attack to challenge them, both are weak on terrorist, they just want to talk and not retaleate like they should, then a fuel shortage will hit like nothing the world has seen .

Another thing you'll find about this site - while there are a few card carrying democrats and a few card carrying republicans, most people on this site understand that the Democrats and the Republicans are essentially the same thing. I know that's a tough concept, but it's correct - both parties stand for the same basic concepts.

Also, the "war on terror" is really just a big excuse for us to engage in endless resource wars. Put away your apple pie and your American Flag here - nobody is swayed by brave shows of patriotism.

Instead of being suckered in by "weak on terror" propaganda, think about what you are going to do in 20 years when neither you or the imaginary "terrorists" have any gasoline.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') will end now and get back to reading this sight......

Awesome idea.
