Slow and Boring?

Unread postby eastbay » Sun 11 May 2008, 22:34:46

It seems to me that this place is getting a bit slow and boring lately. I thought maybe someone here might know why.

I don't know why and can't even guess why.

If you mean PO.com in general, I have to say that if you go back to some of the threads that were started in 2004 and look at what was predicted at the time versus the eventual outcome, the truth has simply outweighed the worst case scenario in a lot of instances.

Makes it harder to argue a cornucopian viewpoint. Not impossible, though.

If you mean the "open discussion" forum, it is probably due to lack of flirting. Nothing like some good flirting threads with the female members to make it more lively.

Perhaps accelerated prepping is consuming more time and energy of some (not all) of the wiser and wittier posters?
Or, some have recently changed planes-of-existence, and are still adjusting to a yet clearer view of the near future?

My bet is that it's a lot more intersting to discuss preps and TEOTWAWKI when it is more of a intelectual exercise and not an actual event in process. I suspect people are dropping out for periods as projects are worked on.

This shit is starting to get real and it's not as much fun.

No, it's not good enough. I want a deeper collapse, a quicker one too because I'm getting tired of waiting ... oh, and I demand a collapse that will take your little dog as well as your kitty collection.

Pup55, the truth appears to feature a faster blowing out of the pretty little candles ... and from all appearances it's now getting underway. I mean, there's no chance whatsoever the replacement I-5 bridge over the Columbia River will ever get built.

1) cornucopians are scarce; peakoil.com is becoming a "1 way street", no discussion... because:

I think you hit the nail on the head. I was actually thinking about this the other day. Back when we were all speculating about what the future would be like, it was a fun intellectual exercise. Now that future is here, and I don't even want to think about where things go from here.

For me, I'm also not posting as much because there's so much to do here on a farm in the spring time. But I think the over-riding picture is making the intellectual exercise of peak-oil-fantasizing not nearly so much fun.

I think its not so much that all the predictions are coming to fruition, but the speed of developments, combined with the realization that its all happening earlier than we expected.

To avoid catastophic system failure as a result of peak oil, we need at least a couple of decades to prepare. Some more moderate projections, USGS for example, put the peak in the 2030 range, 22 years out. We are not even preparing for that time range. Meanwhile, the numbers are showing a plateau NOW. The whole planet has been caught with its pants down.

I think what we are witnessing is the calm before the storm.

The volcano has erupted, and the lava is slowly oozing forward, unstoppable. There is still a little time to get to high ground, but most are going to get caught between the flow and the sea and will have to chose between drowning and being burned alive.

I am now not to so sure anything is happening. I am starting to think that this has all been a real bad dream and when I wake up gas will be 80 cents and everything will be right with the world.

Spending 40% of my income on transportation related costs isn't very boring.

Quite the contrary.
