I think its not so much that all the predictions are coming to fruition, but the speed of developments, combined with the realization that its all happening earlier than we expected.
To avoid catastophic system failure as a result of peak oil, we need at least a couple of decades to prepare. Some more moderate projections, USGS for example, put the peak in the 2030 range, 22 years out. We are not even preparing for that time range. Meanwhile, the numbers are showing a plateau NOW. The whole planet has been caught with its pants down.
