In the winter I imagine you would want as much sunlight as possible while working. You have to adjust your work schedule with your conditions.

When I worked a ranch with my cousin in my youth for a summer in South Texas we were early risers and worked until the heat was unbearable. We would come in for lunch and the afternoon was for relaxing and siestas. In the late afternoon feeding was accomplished and prepping for the following morning. Then it was time for some reading and relaxing then off to bed early so you could get up the next day and do it again.


I think work will be 24 hours round the clock.

While in the marines we had "fire watches" - soliders that would trade off every three hours to stand watch for fires throughout the night.

Also we had a duty and A duty - 24 hour shifts to answer phones and keep an hourly log.

Maybe the new term will be "zombie watchers".


Many ancient civilizations 3 hours-a-day of work was all that was required.

That's what I'm aiming for.

Though, I think you may be mistaken when you say "civilizations" had 3-4 hr workdays. That's typical of non-civilized cultures, but not of civilized ones.

Shifts are reasonably and efficient.

Say you need 8 people per shift...you have 3 shifts...your tribe is 30 strong (working adults)...6 individuals can rotate in an out of the 8 hour sequence...on maybe a 2-3 day cycle.

DAMN good idea for a thread rocc!!!

Have the rules & reg's all spelled out BEFORE the family zombies show up...This has been tossed around several times but I've never seen a thread on this subject specifically.

I've already copied several rules from a few posters...I'll need to think up more that apply to me & my sitch.

Nah, alot of bad inbreeding but not outbreeding. Labs are goofs, good dog for kids, chessies are smarter than most humans I know. He is pretty smart, he lets me know if a new car is on our road by the sound it makes. He is the ultimate zombie alert system. If you are going to have him around people you really need to socialize him though, his need to protect the home is stronger than all dogs. He'd chew up a pitbull, heck our rottie's ear still hasn't grown back because the stupid dog didn't realize that when scraps hit the ground they are for chessies, not rotties. :lol:

We are planning to do it initially in an overarching way that applies to everyone (e.g. if you do drugs, you're out), and also in a specific way .... which is going to require a great deal of self-honesty.

And the young ones are hungry.

So what happens next? Robbery? Murder? Or just extortion?

It appears that a farm could be absolutely filled with excitement.

If you don't your plan and mine are probably very similar...

There really are only a handful of options:

1) dive in a bunker and slam the lid

2) stay in the city and die

3) get to a geographically isolated place with 60-80 folk like minded folk and never sleep.

I don't think there are many other choices...

Seriously, I like your thinking on this. Great thread. I'm just curious if you've mellowed some...

You might also want to start to work on your list of "jobs" on the farm, too, including a healthy smattering of arms training/fabrication/maintenance and perimeter integrity/inspection tasks.
