World Jump Day

Unread postby Tuike » Tue 22 Feb 2005, 18:14:33

Here's a plan to save the world from global warming :o

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Join us in the effort to drive planet earth into a new orbit!

Scientific research has proven this change of planetary positioning would very likely stop global warming, extend daytime hours, and create a more homogenous climate

600 million people in the western hemisphere should jump simultaniously and world would be sent to a new orbit! I have already signed up! 8)

Let's say that the average jumper weighed 100 kilograms (this is a little on the high side but it makes the calculations easy) and that this person could jump a little less than 0.5 meters into the air. This would give us the nice round number of 3 m/s average impact speed. Each jumper would hit the ground with a kinetic energy of 450 joules.

Assuming everyone hit the ground in the same direction (which won't be true -- jumpers in California will actually be working against the efforts of jumpers in Ireland), total impact energy would be around 450 * 600,000,000 joules, or 2.7 * 10^11 J.

This is four orders of magnitude smaller than the energy of the 1908 Tunguska event, which didn't change the Earth's orbit significantly.

This is just plain non-sense.

If you know a little physics you can understand why this won't work. Newton's third law of physics say that "Every action has an opposite reaction."

Here is what will happen: When you jump, you will push yourself up and also the Earth down. This may have some impact on the orbit of earth. But when you are falling towards the Earth back, Earth is pulling you down(gravity) and you are also pulling Earth up toward you by an equal force.

In the end you may achieve a very small change in Earth location while you all 600 million people are on the air. However when you all come down nothing will have been changed. :))

In order for this to work, somehow you should jump so high that you escape from Earth's gravity and you don't fall back. Well then you will be dead in the emptiness of space, and I think it wouldn't matter if Earth changed its orbit or not... :-D
