$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ainan', 'I') have been relatively optimistic about peak oil and the coming die off up until the last month. In the last month or so we have seen food prices surge along with everything else and peak oil entering the main stream more.
My plans rely on the system chugging along for the next 2-3 years much the same, with the masses generally ignorant. But the whole thing seems to be crashing down quicker than i expected, or perhaps I've just been spending too much time reading about doom.
I personally think the current headlines are being overblown
for those living in the First World. There will be real starvation among the world's poor as a result of grains shortages. The world probably can't support the 6+ billion people it has today, let alone the 8-9+ billion projected before Peak People hits.
But I don't think this is the start of The Global Crash, nor do I think wealthy nations are going to be starving. Yes, Costco may only sell you a few months' worth of rice at a time, in an effort to try to maintain product on the shelves at all times. Yes, price inflation is rampant in food and energy.
And yes, I do believe that ultimately America is in for some very hard times.
But I just don't think todays headlines presage those times. Not yet, or at least, not due to Peak Oil. We've got a very screwed up financial system, and I think we're in for a crushing recession (or depression if you prefer). I doubt it'll be a quick one either.
But, if you have work, you'll be able to buy food. You'll even be able to buy gasoline. You may take a serious hit to your lifestyle, but this is not yet The End.
People predicting otherwise are way too early IMHO.
