Re: Smoking Myths and the Role of Detection Bias

Unread postby HEADER_RACK » Sat 01 Mar 2008, 22:06:08

It's all about genetics. Some can smoke all their life and die of old age. Some can live smoke free and still get lung cancer and other plumonary problems.
I smoked for 23 years 2 packs a day, started when I was 12. About a month ago I went to a plumonary specialist. Took x-rays and was hooked up to some breathing machine doing different breathing exercises for about 45 min. Results were Lungs were still clear as a bell! I still quit though. No reason to press my luck

Re smoking: I agree with the OP that moderation is the wisest approach, to most indulgences I'd say. The body can cope with a wide range of abuses if given the opportunity to heal.

Genetics also likely plays a role; some people have stronger overall constitutions than others. One's habitual response to life's inevitable stresses is also a major factor.

But the fact is, chronic heavy smoking (of anything) is generally not too good for your lungs; we didn't evolve in a smoke-filled environment:

Pack of smokes OR gal of gas?

Unread postby vision-master » Thu 13 Mar 2008, 15:32:09

Well, when will gal of gas cost more than a pack of smokes?

Local station:

Gas $3.12 gal
Cigs $4.25

ha, ha...................

Here, gasoline is already more expensive than name brand cigs, when purchased by the carton.

A carton cost me $28.96 out the door last week, which comes out to $2.896 per pack. Regular unleaded is $3.25 here.

Buying, say a pack of Marlboros, costs $3.35 here with tax. So in that sense, some areas of the country are right there.

Last time I was in Chicago, Marlboros were selling for ~$6 per pack, and that was two years ago. Ouch.

3 bucks still buys a fair amount of bicycle fuel. I'd say enough to get you as far as the gallon of gas would get you anyway (20-30 miles, you're most efficient at about 10MPH) as for the smokes, I dunno, progress towards the grave?

I rarely drive, ride around 500 miles a month and don't smoke.
Cigs and gas are just a few things I don't have to pay for....gas only every few months. I don't drink either so that's another huge chunk of dough to sock away...or in my case...buy bicycles!

Oh, if you think that's expensive for smokes, come here. Try around $15 for a pack of 40's. There's a tax of some description on them (I think there's two actually, as I'm certain GST is also applied to them).

That's the one thing that sucks about living in Australia. Everything has an effective 20% "we apply an extra charge because we want to so that we can bleed you dry" charge.

For that price, I would just order some stale cigs online.

I don't smoke anyway. Can't stand the stuff. :P . Fact is, it's like that with ANY good or service, just about.

Indeed. I don't drive either. I much prefer train travel. Or walking. Or biking (though I don't do the latter as there's bugger all provision for bicycles in Sydney (though it is starting to improve, particularly in the inner city, thanks to a proactive Lord Mayor).

Do you still smoke?

Unread postby jasonraymondson » Tue 22 Apr 2008, 22:50:01

As a recently quit smoker, I am wondering how many people on here are still smoking and if so, when do you plan to quit?

Fuck yeah... 2 packs a day here (some days I just smoke instead of eat) . I'll never give it up. I don't care if I die at 45.

Since I started smoking a year ago, I've been getting laid a lot more. I don't know what it is, but smoking makes a man seem more attractive to women.

I can't wait until my ungs turn from pink to grey. Pink is a pussy color anyways.

Also, with the problems we face in the future, I probably won't live long enough for the smokes to kill me.

Btw, I voted that I wanted to be you. What man wouldn't wanna be a topless maid pimp?
