A few months ago we had a huge snowstorm. A few days later I went down to rent a movie at the local video store. The parking lots were still covered with packed ice and snow. I drove our '85 Toyota tercel 4x4 wagon. It gets good gas mileage. I was driving through the parking lot, and there was this new $50k+ BMW SUV that was stuck in the parking lot space in front of the video store. The snow wasn't deep or anything. My car had no probs whatsoever in that parking lot. I drove in, got the movies, and drove out again a few minutes later. And the BMW was still there spinning it's huge tires. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw the look on that rich yuppie's face. I don't think he could believe it either. Felt kinda sorry for him, too! All of the parking spaces at the video store had pretty much the same ice and snow. My $1,200 Toyota 4wd wagon totally outperformed a $50k AWD SUV. My car is true 4wd (not AWD). That expensive BMW SUV was AWD. I have a friend who has a new honda CRV SUV that is also full-time AWD. That friend got easily stuck going mildly off-road due to a very small amount of sand. She couldn't understand why the AWD didn't work better in the dirt. My Toyota wagon has been on jeep trails and in 2 feet of snow without getting stuck. I am now under the impression that AWD SUV's are just overpriced, dangerous, and wasteful status symbols. And most are worthless in low traction conditions.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gg3', 'k')_semler, what you fail to recognize is that the abuse of the tool has become the paradigm case for the use of the tool. ... The fact that someone "wants to" drive a single-digit behemoth through the morning smog to their office parking space, is irrelevant. Since when is "I Want" a moral commandment?

Exactly. It is the person operating the tool that is at fault, not the tool for existing. You are also correct in saying that frivilous items are not a right outlined in the Constitution. The declaraion of independence declares that "Life, liberty, and the presuit of happiness" are among our inaliable rights. Just because you are entitled to presue happiness, does not gauentee you the right to be happy. People need to learn the difference between want and need, IMHO.

I don't blame just SUVs I blame all personal motor transportation, its a bad idea.
If it is possible, get a road bike, most efficent form of transportion on the planet. And it has about 1000 physical and mental benifits.
I ride a road bike that cost about 1000 dollars its not the top of the line but still excellent.

Actually the Mountain Bike is a good choice too because it does not require paved roads (which use a lot of oil to maintain.) The Mountain Bike is slow though. Although I have road my road bike through grass, that was fun, but probably not good for it lol.

Attach a 180 degree swing arm on the side of your Scooter. Attach a Claymore to the end of that. (The Mine, not the Sword). If someone is tailgaiting you, release the swing-arm so that the claymore, which was facing towards the front, is now facing towards the offending SUV.
Lift the plastic safety housing of the arming switch. Arm and Detonate.

Print up a bunch of bumperstickers and stick them on the foul beasts.
"Cops are corrupt and stupid"
"I drive drunk all the time"
Stuff like that.
You get the idea.

I was going for something so incendiary that their vehicle would be vandalized immediately, or that they'd get pulled over by the police that same day. Something so totally unacceptable that they might even get fired if they drove to work like that.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gg3', 'H')ow'bout you call up five or six general engineering contractors, and ask them if they would send in a Caterpillar D-9 or D-11 to do a job they could do with a D-4. They will ask you if you're crazy or just drunk. They know, because their profit margin depends on it, that you do not do overkill when you choose your tools.

They'll HAPPILY send the D9 if its available..... And if your willing to pay for it.
hey, if you guys cant afford to buy an SUV, cant afford to insure and SUV and cant afford gas for an SUV doesnt mean you need to hate on those of us who can.
As an aside, my Expedition gets very little use. I just dont like spending that much in gas to go to work. My Jetta TDI does quite well enough. But, the Expedition does see use for vacations (3 kids + luggage = WHOA!) and off road use. Yes, I like playin in the mud. Just ask Kiddie. :-D

Not this again. Well, Specop, convert to Islam and we'll talk.
But back on topic, that's a reasonable use of an SUV. What people are griping about is people using SUV's for their everyday commute and errands, never leaving the pavement.

My (large) family owns enough of these SUVs(Expo,F150,Suburbans,Explorers,etc) so i will say that--sometimes--they are useful. Anytime you have to pull something or haul something they do come in very handy. I do believe they could be made a little smaller(lighter?)....commuting in one is moronic...
My brother always makes me drive b/c i get 30-35/gallon...he's lucky if he gets 14...:)
People are still free to drive what they want...

Ack you guys.
Sport utes are wonderful trucks. If we find them overused on the roadways, then we just need to up the gas tax a little.
And I'm a cyclist.
Who just sold my Trooper (bummer). I did take it mudding, and even trailriding once. That thing was a blast.
Now I need a new truck. I was thinking an early 90s Toyota pickup. factory lift, 4wd. Maybe an extended cab for the least 'uns.
Edit to add: Plus the only reason we had an SUV boom in the first place is because the hippies were so obnoxious about station wagons in the 70s. Be careful what you wish for. The new station wagons (SUVs) are bigger, heavier, and get just as bad mileage, twenty -hell thirty years later..

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Falconoffury', 'Y')es, but they said that building fuel cells was inexpensive. I read somewhere else that it costs around 1 million dollars per car to build them.

Not so, fuel cell buses only cost a 1/4million. The main problem is that fuel cells use Platinum & they have to be replaced every couple of years & there is not enough platinum to replace them for more than a few years.

What happens to the platinum? Does it get broken off and mixed with the exhaust?

Are SUV's actually safer than cars?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ational Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures show gap in safety between sport utility vehicles and passenger cars last year was widest yet recorded; find people driving or riding in sport utility vehicle in 2003 were nearly 11 percent more likely to die in accident the people in cars; says crash fatalities declined across board in 2003 to lowest levels in six years, with 42,643 people killed in traffic accidents in US; Ward's AutoInfoBank says SUV's accounted for 27.2 percent of all light-duty vehicles in first seven months of 2004, up from 26 percent in period year earlier.

I guess it's just the 'bigger is better' mentality in America.

Obviously many SUV buyers never considered that they needed to make turns around bendy roads ...
