Stop Eating Beef?

Unread postby evilgenius » Mon 31 Mar 2008, 19:03:50

Just a nagging question for the rest of you since I won't eat US beef anyway. Should you stop eating beef right now? The reason I ask is because of the high cost of corn and its resultant impact on cattle raising. Could it be that this will prompt growers to use feeds that contain bone meal and other cattle by-products which are bad for risking incidence of BSE (Mad Cow Disease)?

It's too expensive and it doesn't really taste that great. Besides, I prefer the taste of shrimp, pork and chicken over beef.

I've pretty much stopped eating meat, at least compared to how much I used to eat (almost everyday). Now it's about once a week. I hope to gradually get that down to two or three times a year, mostly holidays. There are plenty of reasons to not eat meat (specifically beef) ranging from moral, environmental, economical, health, etc. I have a hard time convincing myself that I should spend extra money to take away food from another person to feed an animal that will be killed to feed me (for a few hours), in a process that consumes tons of electricity and fuel and helps destroy the environment.

But then two days ago I had free-range fresh lamb. Best I've ever had.

Enjoy it while you can still afford it.

I enjoy rare steak, but it's too expensive. Vennison and lamb are pretty good too. Have you ever tried alligator? That's got to be the worst meat I've eaten... it's so fucking rubbery.

I don't understand how people can give up meat completely. I feel like shit when I don't eat meat, but maybe that's cause I'm hypoglycemic.

Meat is a pretty big thing in Alaska---Wild Moose and Caribou, Salmon and Halibut, and grouse and duck if we can get it. Beef and chicken from the grocery store otherwise.

I'm unconcerned with the starving masses that could be fed with the corn used to raise my dinner. I eat beef, in no small quantity for several reasons:

-I Can.
-It is not expensive, by my standards
-It is readily available
-It makes me feel good, and in particular, makes me feel Superior to the starving masses who, if they really need a meal, can eat the 12 pounds of flies on their face.
-If you have not smoked an entire Black Angus Rib over hickory, you have not lived.
-I live in an area that has not outstripped its local carrying capacity
-Because it only takes about 16 barrels of oil to produce the beef I eat in a year, and the cost is not an issue.
-I have a better quality of life than most people in the world, I work hard to earn it
-I often eat locally raised beef from farmers I know and trust who would not be stupid enough to feed cow parts back to cows.

I also eat:
-chicken
-veal
-turkey
-duck
-all sorts of seafood
-pheasant
-cornish hen
-deer, Bambi is best
-moose, an outstanding meat
-wild boar
-pork, bacon is good, thats all there is to it
-lamb
-alligator

Goat is not on my list, nor is yak, ostrich, monkey brains, dog, nor are such unpalatable entrees as beef sweetbreads, tongue, mountain oysters, pancreas, or spleen.

Good Golly No!

Depending on the breed and location corn doesn't really come into the equasion until it hits the feed lot. On our spread Brangus steers and hefers eat bermuda grass and hay. Maybe mineral blocks or winter wheat but we save the corn for the deer.

I'm just a greenhorn, Pops is the real expert. However IMHO-most of what you fear (mad cow disease, expensive corn, questionable bone meal inputs) as well as fecal contamination start at the feed lot.

In the future(post peak) I'd like to sell leaner cows with lower yeilds but free from steroids and feed lot conditions. I would like to see less feed lots and see folks get their beef locally than trucked into Wal-Mart from Kansas City.

People who still continue to eat factory farmed beef need to spend some serious hard time in a dilapidated re-education camp located in a very secluded part of northern Alaska.

Everyone should know by now that eating factory farmed animals is flat out insane. Those who keep doing it need to spend some decades breaking up large rocks.

If you haven't seen Fast Food Nation yet, go see it. They pretty much gave both barrels to the feedlots, the processors, and the retailers. On the flip- side no grief to the rancher.

Goat is good as taco meat. Ate a couple pounds before my roommate asked me how that old goat tastes. :) Anyway this thread needs more corned beef. I was told here that there will be corned beef in the end times, it is the only thing now that makes me carry on.

I eat beef every couple of months or less frequently.

I mostly eat our own homegrown chickens, otherwise I'm mostly vegetarian. I'd eat our local deer if I could get someone to shoot them for me (hope my husband gets that gun one of these days).

I eat meat 3 - 4 meals a day for the other 3 meals I normally eat greens, fruits or something else.

Always remember the best way to eat is 7 small meals a day.

After doing a little research (my own), i've come to the conclusion the real devil is sugar and simple carbs. I've basically cut all sugar (refined) out of my diet along with most carbs (wheat products). I've felt pretty good so far and i'm nearing 2 weeks. Its pretty much meat/fruit/veggies...i'm lactose intolerant, so i don't eat too much cheese, but wouldn't mind starting those pills so i can. I think a person can also not eat enough fish or nuts.

I don't know how someone can deny themselves a pork roast or chuck roast with potatoes and carrots...i tried, but couldn't hold out long (in the past i went as long as a week without eating meat). I do eat Boca burgers a lot too, they have lots of protein.
lawns should be outlawed.

I basically started reading into the negative effects of intensive animal agriculture and got the confidence to try out vegetarianism from my friend. I started cutting back on meet about 4 months ago, and have been on a once a week or less basis lately while almost abstaining completely recently. Its lost its appeal to me for the most part. It's really not that difficult if you know what to eat and how to get a good diet without resorting to a bunch of sugars.
