Oh, we so want this to be true! Can an elephant be trained to paint a particular drawing?

We're slowly waking up to just how intelligent elephants really are. They have enormous brains, you know. Think how much imagination and creativity went into that painting.

Thanks for the great link.

Gobsmacked wonder. That's how I feel. How I love elephants, particularly when they clue in that they're actually in control, freak out and go on a rampage, during a circus performance. Most people are so afraid for the people involved...I'm just cheering the elephant on.

Here's great attack footage. The humans are screaming, the elephants are bleating. The bleating translated means, "How many times do we have to tell you fools, we hate being confined. F you!!" Yeay elephants!

Kinda like when the tiger munched Roy?

Yep, don't ever mistake a huge wild carnivore for a large but docile stuffed plush toy.

There is nothing more dangerous than a wild animal that has been tamed. People mistake taming for the domestication process, which involves the nurturing effects of taming, plus the genetic effects of selecting for docility. Indian elephants are partially domesticated. African elephants are not. They are super dangerous....but cute! :)

together with european hedgehogs African elephants are my favorite animals, don't like to see either being kept captive but I indeed got my first lesson in sex by two african elephants going at it in Rotterdam zoo on a birthday party outing when I was 6 or so

PS I wonder how hedgehogs manage to procreate....missionary position?

I think so. Or at least be trained to paint over fine pencil lines which the audience - well back from the action- can't see. In one of the other videos, exactly the same painting is produced, in exactly the same sequence of brush strokes, but on an orange paper background.

Personally I prefer chimp artwork - more of a vigorous abstract expressionist (think Mark Rothko on crack) style, and not just churning out the same picture over and over like these performing elephants.

I love elephant attack videos.

Thanks tb.

Oh yeah, the paintings good too. I saw a clip on tv once where an elephant had a white cross stuck to its head and when it looked in the mirror it knew where to put its trunk to remove the sticker. In the experiment there were other elephants that could not do this. I suspect many humans lack self awareness too.

I think we all know deep down about the self awareness of elephants. Its what makes George Orwells Shooting an elephant so moving.

Not quite: YouTube - Hedgehog sex in Volda Norway

Image

Well, I think that's doggy style anyway...

In related news, Man needed surgery after sex with hedgehog.

You can clearly see the handlers assisting the elephants to paint in other videos - part of their training? Is the one linked here purely staged (you can't see whether the handler is there or not)?

From the same source as the hedgehog story: Art expert fooled by chimp's painting. Ananova must be the Reuters of Animal Planet stories or somethin'.

That must be how it's done. But, oh! What a rich video.

In that peaceful setting with the other elephants walking around and the casual onlookers, and the birds-chirping, it seems so utterly natural to see an elephant actually drawing a picture.

You can almost hear her humming a tune as she applies the brush.

Elephants are one of the few animals who have a shot at taking people on and actually winning on occasion. It's as if they are expressing the rightful rage of the entire animal kingdom, while they're doing it. Beautiful.

Okay, so it was too good to be true. I should've been more skeptical. You'd think I would've learned as much by now.

I just assumed the elephant was tracing a pencil line. It's still amazing!
