I was thinking, I live in Arizonia, one of the most sunniest places in the country and a solar powered scooter would be useful out here.

Does anyone know if they even exist? Or possible a scooter that is electric and recharges on solar power? Thanks for any information you may have.

Here's an article from MSNBC. If you read down you will find out about an electric scooter dealer that has teamed up with a solar panel dealer. You can recharge your scooter using the solar panel.

Those scooters seem to cost over $1,000. I think your better off buying an electric scooter and charging the batteries using a solar PV panal.

solar scooter

Unread postby WebHubbleTelescope » Tue 14 Sep 2004, 22:13:49

How can I resist this one.

The original solar-powered scooter is the bicycle. Here is one pathway:

Sunshine -> Rice -> Chew -> Digest -> Metabolize -> Legs -> Pedal -> Move

And seriously, Velorution is the site to keep up-to-date with

I'd hate to crash any kind of moving vehicle with solar panels on them.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Itch', 'I')'d hate to crash any kind of moving vehicle with solar panels on them.

No, you wear them. Besides providing energy, the wearable panels provide protection against road rash and high-speed reentry heat, just like Space Shuttle tiles.

This is what could happen if you use the conventional protection of relying only on helmet and mouthguard.

Mouthguard, the chimperor used a mouthguard? Yes, he did.

Scooter family says...

Unread postby NevadaGhosts » Thu 17 Feb 2005, 02:14:29

Purchased 2 new scooters in preparation for higher gasoline prices. Will be selling our only car soon. Got a 2005 Suzuki Burgman 400cc scooter (silver) that gets between 65 and 70 mpg. Can easily cruise at highway speeds with passenger on back (can hit 95 mph with just rider). Large storage compartment under seat. Very good wind protection. Very comfortable seats. Also purchased a 2004 Honda Metropolitan 50cc scooter. Runs at about 30 mph. has optional small windshield. Gets between 95 and 100 mpg. Great for in town. Scares the hell out of the SUV drivers 8). Will learn to live without a car. Sometimes impractical, but very liveable for me and my wife. And besides, it's usually a lot more fun to go somewhere (or anywhere) on a scooter or motorcycle than in a cage (car). Who else here is downsizing their vehicles in preparation for higher fuel prices?

Also, here's a link to an article about $2.50 per gallon gas prediction for summer of 2005: [url=http://www.csnews.com/csnews/headlines/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000790500article[/url]

Jato, nice 'scooter'.

I love riding motorcycles/scooters. I have owned just about every type of bike... from sport bike to dual sport. Also had few cruisers. Hadn't ridden in a while. My wife and I decided to get cheap transportation and sell the car (in preparation for higher fuel prices). My wife has been very understanding about peak oil and the coming price shocks. But I still can't convince my sister to sell her huge SUV before it becomes worthless. Maybe someday soon more Americans will realize that scooters/motorcycles are real (and economical) transportation, rather than just weekend 'toys'.

You are lucky Texas is flat. That thing would never haul me up and down the hills near my house. Not to mention I would get run over by cars (there are few sidewalks and lots of narrow roads).

Here is my wife's motorcycle...she gets good milage:

That Burgman is a hell of a machine. I've got an old sport touring bike that gets about 45 mpg. Since learning about peak oil it has ceased to be a "pleasure" vehicle and become a economical vehicle. I ride it for commuting and stuff. It's nice.

And 2 of these pure electric scooters.

Up to 13mph (20.8km) and up to 8 miles distance on a change

I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla. And after some serious thought, I've decided to keep it. It gets 26-29 in the city and 34-35 on the highway.

I am mostly keeping it because the car is paid for. It's insurance is low, and handles rough weather with ease. I wouldn't want to be in the shoes of the person trying to ride a Moped in Winter weather.

Still, I have also considered getting a Moped for Spring/Summer/Fall Use. If I had to choose, it would probably be either a Honda Ruckus or a Honda Elite 80.

I would very much love to get me a Honda 250 or one of those F1 Engineering Diesel Dual-sports their coming out with.
I got two problems though.
My mother will suffocate me if I trade/sell my Bronco II for one of the above. And also from the law enforcement in this area.
I saw a massive sting operation where they were probably targeting motorcyclists without the proper(faggish) M1 permit on their license.
The riders being hauled off to a concentration camp :( , the bikes being hauled off to an impound yard.
Perhaps they should ditch the licensing requirement altogether for motorcycles. The fools will go down in number due to them crashing and offing themselves. Those that will know how to ride will be the ones that are truly happy.

Currently I own a 2004 Aprilia Atlantic 200 that gets between 65-72 mpg. It's great for around town, and can handle some highway traffic. It's managable at speeds up to 75, but anything above that starts to feel unstable. I have maxed it out at 85 mph. Riding in rain or high wind conditions are unsafe. I don't even think about riding it if there is ice or snow on the ground.

Image

My other vehicle is a 1997 Ford Escort wagon that gets around 28 mpg highway. Right now I'm only using it when I have to go on the highways, which...unfortunately, is everyday because my commute sucks. When the weather gets better, I'll be riding the scooter.

I'm hoping that as gas prices go up, and demand for more fuel efficient vehicles increases, that more options will become available on the market. Until then, my plan is to ride the scooter as much as possible and save up for a fuel efficient car.

I have a mountain bike with a 43cc engine mounted on the back. Gets about 100mpg and tops out around 45km/h. Can also lift the engine off the wheel and pedal normally. Looking to get a real motorbike/scooter when I can afford one. Driving the tyre through a 1 inch steel roller isnt ideal. [smilie=5moped.gif]

My scoot is a Kawasaki KLR650 since I live in a rural area with a lot of unimproved roads. It does great on and off road and can do 100mph pretty easily. Gets aabout 42mpg...

55MPG or thereabouts, and better if you lay off the gas somewhat. Great bike. I almost sold it to trade my Honda Civic in for an old Mercedes diesel to convert to biodiesel, but I'm going to skip it. I think I'll be better off with the motorcycle/car combo. I'll actually use less fuel by riding as much as possible.

I might even sell the car to put a nice fairing on the bike and ride in the rain, too. Except the people in LA drive like idiots and I don't want to die.
