What would you put in it?

Image

Assume you don't require any medication to stay alive.

You CAN'T put any kind of electronic tracking, homing, signaling or anything like that. You can put in a small flashlight or small radio, but nothing like a beacon.

Here's what I would put in the box:

1. Gerber multi-tool (assume it will fit in box) and small Spyderco knife
2. small sharpening rod
3. fishing line and hooks
4. thin and medium sized wire
5. stainless steel mirror
6. metal whistle
7. fire starting kit
8. wax covered matches
9. fingernail clippers
10. 2 finger saws
11. two 3'x3' pieces cut from a reflective emergency blanket
12. two sets of shoelaces
13. sewing kit, with several extra needles
14. safety pins
15. dental floss (A LOT)
16. light lanyard
17. compass
18. folding tablespoon and folding fork
19. several folded coffee filters
20. a few Q-Tip swabs
21. 10 zip ties
22. several folded pieces of foil
23. 2 keychain LED lights (about the size of 4 stacked quarters each)
24. $100 bill
25. pair of latex gloves
26. 2 quart freezer ziplock bags
27. 2 gallon freezer ziplock bags
28. a few Band-Aids :)

Gold.

If not gold, then;

Fish hooks
Leatherman
small bic lighter
Fresnel Lens
four Zucchini seeds
the rest of the space with parachute cord

I don't think you could fit all your list into a band aid box.

3 or 4 pages of porn from the Private Collection and a tube of vaseline. My gerber (actually I use a Victorinox Multi Tool) never leaves my side so I would have that anyway.

If you are going to pack a friend, you might want to try something a little more traditional:

Ewww. What, are you sick?

Then again, she might make a good optional life raft...

Wait a minute, why not just make a raft out of coconuts like they did on Gilligan's Island?

How bout some swim goggles?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', 'Y')ou CAN'T put any kind of electronic tracking, homing, signaling or anything like that. You can put in a small flashlight or small radio, but nothing like a beacon.

First, I'm not sure you can even get a tin Bandaid box anymore and it is not going to keep my stuff dry.

Second, why would I go to the trouble of becoming stranded and packing only silly survivalist stuff and not some kind of electronics like a beacon, sat phone or 2-way?

I have a CAMOUFLAGE band-aid tin I got a while back. (How cool is that?)

The purpose of the exercise is to think within limits when facing an unknown set of challenges. If you can put a beacon and a sat phone in the pack then there is no challenge.

Remember that scene in Apollo 13 when the ground engineers had to figure out a way to build an oxygen generator (or something like that) using only the materials aboard the ship? It's that kind of challenge.

Also, if the container is larger than a band-aid box, the lists become way too long.

I'm surprised we are using as much precious space as we are for porn.

The most valuable item may be the dental floss. The Glide dental floss is probably the strongest type of line (pound for pound) that there is. I'm sure that an equivalent amount of spider web might be stronger, but I saw a show about how they make the Glide floss and it's incredibly high tech stuff. You could use it for lashing, fishing, sewing, making a snare, or flossing your teeth.

That is cool! Like most guys I like containers, they give me a reason to buy stuff to fill them.

OK, can I critic your list?

1. I like a Kershaw tool but no matter.
2. find a rock
3. make a spear (see # 1)
4. good
5. for what?
6. see #5
7. for this to be viable for any length of time it could be huge. I'd say a little flint and #1 are better but best to learn to do it the old friction way and keep a live coal.
8. See #7
9. ?
10. Is that a cable saw? If so I agree at least at the first.
11.
12. Shoelaces but no socks?
13. ?
14?
15. good
16. you have shoelaces...
17. You can't figure which side of the island the sun rises and sets?
18. ?
19. ?
20. ?
21. Good idea but I like light line better (you can't redo the knot on a zip)
22. Yes
23. You have fire...
24. couldn't hurt
25-27. I'd try for a trash bag or two.
28. or a little self rolled duct tape.

Not to mess with your thread but if you can take all the things you mention into a situation where you might become stranded on some deserted island you probably have a better standing with Homeland Security than the average bear and so I wonder why you would need to use your neat Bandaid box?

Of course I couldn't take my Kershaw either so I try not to fly.

Anyway, my point is simply that one can pack knowledge into a smaller space.

I would want that little box stuffed with essential vitamins and nothing else. In fact, I would cheat and load my pockets with them too. :)

Good thoughts.

One of the core issues is whether you want to pack tools or supplies. Obviously, in such a small space you want to make virtually all of it tools, since there just isn't enough space for any consumables to speak of. I tried to load mine up with tools primarily.

Maybe I should re-phrase the challenge:

You are stranded on an island. You've been there quite a while. One day while walking on the beach you run across a bottle and rub it and a genie pops out. The genie tells you.

"I will provide you with a band-aid sized tin of any gear you want that is available for sale on the Earth, excluding any type of electronic communication device. The total retail value of the contents may not exceed $300--no tins of uranium or anything like that. Don't try to do any wish manipulation, I've been in this bottle a long time and I know all the wish games people play. Just tell me what you want in the tin and I will provide it to you."

What would you tell the genie?

I got the camouflage tin at Walmart a while back. It was a Neosporin/bandage package. Every time I look at it I think about what its contents would be if it were a survival kit.

Comments to your comments below:

1. I like a Kershaw tool but no matter.

Good tool.

2. find a rock

A sharpening rod won't take up much space and will allow you to sharpen your knife as well as work with any other metal you may find around the island.

3. make a spear (see # 1)

Fishing line and hooks don't take up much space at all. I would rather have them and not need them....

4. good

5. for what?

Signal aircraft or passing ships, use it for a cooking surface in a bind, look at your impressive beard. Could be fashioned into a tool or weapon in a bind.

6. see #5

Signal passing ships or VERY low flying planes. [smilie=eusa_shifty.gif] Scare an attacking wild animal or natives you may come across. Flush out birds if you have some way of killing one (snare, sling, throw a rock, etc.)

7. for this to be viable for any length of time it could be huge. I'd say a little flint and #1 are better but best to learn to do it the old friction way and keep a live coal.

The kit would just be two pieces of metal (or some kind of material) you can create sparks with (I used to have one when I was in scouting, pretty neat)

8. See #7

A few matches could get you going when you first got there, and you could keep coals if you wanted to.

9. ?

Could be used to trim wire, cut string cleanly, trim nails, smooth rough edges on metal with the file; a good tool for the amount of space it takes up.

10. Is that a cable saw? If so I agree at least at the first.

Yes.

11.

12. Shoelaces but no socks?

Shoelaces could be used for many different things. No room in the tin for socks.

13. ?

To repair your clothing when you start to look like the Incredible Hulk after he calms down. Also, you could do one of those Rambo stitch yourself up things if it came to that.

14?

Don't take up much room, and could be used to attach things to your clothes so you don't lose them.

15. good

16. you have shoelaces...

True. I'll remove the lanyard.

17. You can't figure which side of the island the sun rises and sets?

Not at night when you are trying to navigate in your raft built out of coconuts.

18. ?

Castaway gotta eat. You may need tools for that. The spoon can be used for digging if needed.

19. ?

Can be used to remove sand and other debris from water. Can be re-used a lot. Takes up almost no room.

20. ?

Takes up almost no room and you may be able to use them to build a sat phone if you're like the professor on Gilligan's Island.

21. Good idea but I like light line better (you can't redo the knot on a zip)

Sometimes a zip works best. A zip can be used to make two lengths of cord into an elastic length because the zip can act as a spring. It's hard to describe, but I have used zips before to do things that no other connector could have done as well. If you are severely injured a zip may be the only reliable tourniquet you can apply to keep you from bleeding out before you get back to camp and get the Kershaw ready for..... :(

22. Yes

23. You have fire...

Yes, but you may need to take a quick look at something in the middle of the night when the fire is getting low.

24. couldn't hurt

25-27. I'd try for a trash bag or two.

I'm thinking water storage primarily. A trash bag is not well-suited for that.

28. or a little self rolled duct tape.

That would work well too.

OK, a more serious reply:

John McCann's book Build the Perfect Survival Kit is all about cramming as many doodads as possible into bandaid/Altoid tins, which survival knife to buy, pros and cons of various folding saws, etc. Covers this topic pretty handily, and isn't too pricey either!
