$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('shortonoil', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sjn', 'I')f it is no longer economic to truck goods to WalMart, the empty shelves will be devastating even before there are widespread outages due to the system sputtering as inventries fall below MOL. It all depends on whether prices rise fast enough to keep the system operating, and whether there is the slack to shift the costs to the consumer or else goverment intervention in the form of explict rationing or subsidies to keep the trucks running.
It doesn’t look like government intervention would effective or even possible. The wheels are grinding to a halt on every front. The banking system is in systemic self destruct mode, trucking firms are going out of business by the train load, and the consumer is tanking by the minute. This relationship is not a simple linear X happens because Y happened event. It looks to be more like a Chaos Theory event, where everything falls apart at once.
If that is what happens, there will be no fixing it! I have suspected for quite a while that PO is not compatible with our present economic/financial system.

Yes, I agree. I never meant to imply that it was actually possible, it is just what would be necessary.

Why is Diesel so much higher than gasoline? I thought Diesel dropped below gasoline during the summer.

That doesn't seem to be happening this year. Why?

Yeah, diesel is weird. I remember sometime back diesel actually being cheaper then gasoline...But now there is a $.80 premium around here. I guess its supply/demand.

I wish people would start letting go of their Jetta TDI's for pennies on the dollar...wouldn't mind scooping one up!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('frankthetank', 'D')iesel jumped another nickel today 4.11 a gallon. This has got to be KILLING truckers.

Got that right: Independent truckers groan as diesel fuel prices rise
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')bout 9 percent of America's 3.4 million truckers are classified as independent, self-employed owner-operators responsible for buying their own fuel, the U.S. Department of Labor reports.

"We can't buy extra groceries, can't go the places we used to go," said Bill T. Bateson, 47, of Auburn, a trucker since he was 19 and an independent since 1985. Bateson owns two trucks for his business, BB of Auburn, Michigan. Since the first of the year, he has spent $6,800 on fuel for one truck. He estimates his profits will drop by at least 30 percent from last year.

"It cuts into everything," he said. "I can't take my kids to the movies or to Saginaw Spirit games like I used to."

Having hauled computers, aircraft parts and various equipment across America and into Canada -- "everything that can be hauled, I've hauled at one time" -- Bateson now accepts jobs to drive only within Michigan. "Customers are hurting due to the economy, as well," Bateson said.

Trucker charged in theft of fuel
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')ASSILLON A self-employed truck driver and another man were arrested Monday night on charges of stealing 206 gallons of diesel fuel.
Kristan B. Reed, 38, of 702 Locust St. in Carrollton, and Judd M. Groover, 36, of 5241 Arlington Ave. NW in Jackson Township, each were charged with felony theft, according to Stark County Jail records. The charge is a fifth-degree felony punishable upon conviction by a maximum of one year in prison and a $2,500 fine.

Couple news items about hybrid trucks, such as Soaring Diesel Prices Spur Interest In Hybrid Trucks
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ew EPA standards and $100-a-barrel oil are creating demand for hybrid big rigs, garbage trucks and dump trucks, even with the 35 percent premium over conventional vehicles, Forbes reports.
The appeal: hybrid trucks can deliver fuel savings of 5 percent to 60 percent, depending on how it is driven (hybrid power systems work best in vehicles that stop and start a lot like delivery trucks, garbage trucks and school and city buses). Long-haul vehicles can expect savings on the low end.

$3.39 and $3.99 where I live.

Even at $3.40 (which would be dirt cheap here) you are talking about $700 in fuel.

I am glad I am not a trucker, but if I were I would have become a fuel system expert and modified my equipment in every way possible to burn cheaper fuels like waste vegetable oil and such. It is amazing to me how few people actually ever consider alternatives to what they are used too.

It's easier to change ways/job if you have a high level of education. It's a lot less easier for someone who's been a trucker all his life.

The reason diesel is high is that demand destruction won't happen with diesel (servicing the trucking fleet) the way it does for personal transportation. So we are likely to see diesel shortages before gasoline shortages. Same deal with fuel oil (no heat = freeze in the winter).

This is going on all over the world. It is not just a North American problem.

Truckers ask Bush to tap oil reserves

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ith diesel prices at record highs, the trucking industry's main trade group on Monday urged President Bush to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

In a letter to the White House, American Trucking Associations President and Chief Executive Bill Graves said surging diesel prices, which on Saturday hit nearly $4.04 a gallon, "will greatly magnify our current economic slowdown and delay our economic recovery." The ATA, whose members include United Parcel Service Inc. and Knight Transportation Inc., last week said the nation's 3.5 million truck drivers are on pace to spend a record $135 billion on diesel fuel this year, up $22 billion from 2007. Graves said it now costs drivers more than $1,000 to fill a typical tractor-trailer.

Yes, the reason diesel prices are high is only partly due to US demand, but mostly due to strong worldwide demand. However due to the fact Spring is almost here in the Northern Hemisphere, diesel prices may fall back some vs. gasoline.

How the US deals with low diesel supplies in the upcoming US harvest season may be 'interesting'.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')hina Feb crude imports at peak, diesel imports surge
The world's second-largest oil consumer also boosted February diesel imports by nearly ten times over a year earlier at 327,753 tonnes, as oil firms continued to stock up after two months of near-record purchases to fight a supply shortage late 2007.
