Got that right:
Independent truckers groan as diesel fuel prices rise$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')bout 9 percent of America's 3.4 million truckers are classified as independent, self-employed owner-operators responsible for buying their own fuel, the U.S. Department of Labor reports.
"We can't buy extra groceries, can't go the places we used to go," said Bill T. Bateson, 47, of Auburn, a trucker since he was 19 and an independent since 1985. Bateson owns two trucks for his business, BB of Auburn, Michigan. Since the first of the year, he has spent $6,800 on fuel for one truck. He estimates his profits will drop by at least 30 percent from last year.
"It cuts into everything," he said. "I can't take my kids to the movies or to Saginaw Spirit games like I used to."
Having hauled computers, aircraft parts and various equipment across America and into Canada -- "everything that can be hauled, I've hauled at one time" -- Bateson now accepts jobs to drive only within Michigan. "Customers are hurting due to the economy, as well," Bateson said.
