It all depends on whether prices rise fast enough to keep the system operating, and whether there is the slack to shift the costs to the consumer or else goverment intervention in the form of explict rationing or subsidies to keep the trucks running.

Why is Diesel so much higher than gasoline? I thought Diesel dropped below gasoline during the summer.

Yeah, diesel is weird. I remember sometime back diesel actually being cheaper then gasoline...But now there is a $.80 premium around here. I guess its supply/demand.

I wish people would start letting go of their Jetta TDI's for pennies on the dollar...wouldn't mind scooping one up!

The reason diesel is high is that demand destruction won't happen with diesel (servicing the trucking fleet) the way it does for personal transportation. So we are likely to see diesel shortages before gasoline shortages. Same deal with fuel oil (no heat = freeze in the winter).

Here in southern Alberta deisel is 1.22 per Lt at the pump that is approx 5.09 per usa gallon ,now is time to do the seeding of crops and farmers are in a rush to get there fuels tanks filled and its a waiting list .
I afraid we are in for tough times we need these independent truckers sure most companies offer sur charges on the greight but there is a breaking point

In a letter to the White House, American Trucking Associations President and Chief Executive Bill Graves said surging diesel prices, which on Saturday hit nearly $4.04 a gallon, "will greatly magnify our current economic slowdown and delay our economic recovery." The ATA, whose members include United Parcel Service Inc. and Knight Transportation Inc., last week said the nation's 3.5 million truck drivers are on pace to spend a record $135 billion on diesel fuel this year, up $22 billion from 2007. Graves said it now costs drivers more than $1,000 to fill a typical tractor-trailer.
