The Big Pine Revisited

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Wed 27 Feb 2008, 15:50:00

For those of you who have been around a while, you may recall that I complained that they took down a big beautiful tree. It must have been two years ago. That building is still not complete. For 6 months the yellow paneling was not complete. Today, I see that they are putting brick red paneling up. The yellow paneling folks went out of business, I guess. It's jarring to say the least.

I bet they could plate it with gold and it still wouldn't be worth the tree to you.

I have a favorite tree. It is a huge, beautiful pine on the front lawn of a property in my parents' neighborhood. The home is a small, old farmhouse that must have been there long before the neighborhood was built around it. Every time I drive by that tree I revel in its beauty, and I know it would upset me if it was cut down.

My second favorite tree was the weeping birch that was on our own front lawn until just last year. We had to take it down; it had died, a gradual death, though we tried to save it. I used to love looking at it from my bedroom window. The yard is really bare without it, I guess we'll have to plant a new one.

So many perfectly good trees, though, are cut down every summer in our neighborhood. Usually they're evergreens and people don't like the needles.

Yes, I liked that tree. It was the tallest one for miles around. Occasionally I would see a hawk perched atop it. So they put in some condos and had placed yellow paneling on it. But they didn't finish. They couldn't get anymore yellow paneling. So they put on red paneling and it looks absurd. I can just imagine them brainstorming, "what are we gonna do?"
