Whether we gloat about it has nothing to do with anything, it does not affect the outcome one tiny jot.
What is a real tragedy is that something can be done and no-one, not even the people in the line of fire, is doing anything to avert their own doom. The even bigger kick in the teeth is that I bet the US and other Western nations (my own included) won't run out of Chinese rice. Feeling bad about their suffering is close to worthless unless we, the rich and gluttonous West, step down our standards of living and stop demanding cheap food from poor nations. Who'd like to go first?
For what it's worth, I take no joy or satisfaction in the potential suffering of my fellow humans.
4 billion souls have to be offloaded, and fast, if the planet is to be "saved". There are various ways to do this, none of them pretty. I personally see this as an inevitability and a necessity, and I know I may be one of the ones to go. But I'd rather have 4 billion go than risk pushing the Earth into the climate disaster she's currently heading for because then no-one will survive, which would be the biggest tragedy of them all.
We've tried nothin' and we're all out of ideas.
I am only one. I can only do what one can do. But what one can do, I will do. -- John Seymour.
