It is true, many people put the needs of the environment above the needs of the people dependant upon it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TireFire', 'S')eems like you're talking about poisoining hundreds of million of people, maybe even murdering them.

This does not seem seem to be a very humane thing to do.

What if they do it to themselves?

Whether we gloat about it has nothing to do with anything, it does not affect the outcome one tiny jot.

What is a real tragedy is that something can be done and no-one, not even the people in the line of fire, is doing anything to avert their own doom. The even bigger kick in the teeth is that I bet the US and other Western nations (my own included) won't run out of Chinese rice. Feeling bad about their suffering is close to worthless unless we, the rich and gluttonous West, step down our standards of living and stop demanding cheap food from poor nations. Who'd like to go first?

For what it's worth, I take no joy or satisfaction in the potential suffering of my fellow humans.

4 billion souls have to be offloaded, and fast, if the planet is to be "saved". There are various ways to do this, none of them pretty. I personally see this as an inevitability and a necessity, and I know I may be one of the ones to go. But I'd rather have 4 billion go than risk pushing the Earth into the climate disaster she's currently heading for because then no-one will survive, which would be the biggest tragedy of them all.

I was having a go at the original poster's "Good News" idiocy.

I don't happen to believe that we need to shed four billions to achieve a sustainable population. Check out Monte's much-posted synthesis of reports for how the recent ones tend to show higher sustainable populations than the older ones.

I'm just fed up with the pre-pubescent attitudes of some people on here. If they'd ever lost a child (as I have) they would perhaps temper their ardour when calling for global dieoff.

My thoughts exactly. I do wonder about the mental health of some posters on here.
Yes yes, how very terrible... Here, let me fix that for you with a
much more acceptable media spin version.

Steam Cannon Spins It!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')omething must be done about about these rice shortages
and it's time for the US to step in! Our farmers will provide the best
quality of Genetically Modified rice and fluoride treated foods so
Asians can live better lives with better teeth!

Food genetically modified with viruses

Fluoride reduces fertility

Now would it really be so cruel to contaminate the rest of the world
with the viruses and birth control agents found in American food?

All glibness aside, even the UN has said that we can feed the world organically. By extension, using sustainable techniques may eventually hit their radar.

I stand by my original statements. I've lived around Orientals, too many of them. I'd rather see them die off than me and mine be turned into rubbery-tasting "fishcake" for the Asian hordes.

I see....

Davep - I see your point about the idiocy, and agree with you. I'm sorry for your loss too, how incredibly painful for you.

If we do have to shed 4 billion, we could always hope the idiots and bigots go first, eh?

I didn't even feel threatened by Asians when I lived in Asia (well, except for one time when a couple of us were pinned down by a sniper, but a US gun ship took care of that). I sure don't feel threatened here in the heartland of America.

Besides, the problem with any sort of booby trap is that it can sometimes backfire on your own team just as easily. You ship poisoned rice overseas and it could easily come back to you in some food import.

Rising rice prices spark concerns across Asia

Unread postby Ferretlover » Fri 28 Mar 2008, 09:23:45

Global supplies tumble, sparking protests, hurting aid agencies
MANILA, Philippines - Philippine activists warn about possible riots. Aid agencies across Asia worry how they will feed the hungry. Governments dig deeper every day to fund subsidies.
A sharp rise in the price of rice is hitting consumer pocketbooks and raising fears of public turmoil in the many parts of Asia where rice is a staple.
Part of a surge in global food costs, rice prices on world markets have jumped 50 percent in the past two months and at least doubled since 2004. Experts blame rising fuel and fertilizer expenses as well as crops curtailed by disease, pests and climate change. There are concerns prices could rise a further 40 percent in coming months. …

ive seen so many rice shortage threads in the past month

yes a 50% rise in a few months on the main crop of a bilion people would spark concern anywhere

however the fun times still lie ahead

the real 'concern' that governments have is that they'll be deposed if there are hundreds of thousands of starving asians not getting their daily rice fix

its already starting in other places with other grain prices, but lordy help asia if they have a weak rice harvest

rice sucks anyway, its pathetic so many of our species live on these grains as their primary food; its a sidedish at best

grains convert to pure glucose in the gut, and also leech nutrients, thats why grain-dependent populations are so succeptible to disease epidemics and diabetes

personally ill be glad if we cut down on the grain-eating population, maybe people will starve to the point where they'll eat each other....mmm tastes like pork

seriously we are in such overshoot if we depend on cultivated weeds to feed 1/2 the world population, i dont know how to make it any clearer
