$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('kevincarter', 'S')trange and bizarre stuff..

Can this be considered "enterteinment"? I'm just wondering.

Do they plan to put a webcam showing the face of the guy who is going to get the rice so we can see his expression as we win or lose? That would boost their audience.

IT'S PATHETIC.

WORLD'S FOOD PROBLEMS ARE NOT ABOUT FOOD.

Get over it.

Who said we're doing this for the donations? I enjoy a good vocabulary booster. :D

I dunno how many people are getting "fed", but so far the total are almost to 6 billion grains of rice x 25 mg (the weight of 1 grain of rice). That's a shitload of rice!

I guess when you do the calculations. It shows a counter on the site of how much rice has been donated.

Is 150,000 KG of rice a lot?

Well, thats roughly 1400 50lb bags of rice which retail for about US $12. So figure a wholesale of maybe US $10K - not a lot of corporate dough. Its the shipping it too the poor starving masses that will be the rub. Once you get it over the sea, past the corrupt customs agents, government officials, and miscellaneous paramilitary groups you might be able to feed a small village for part of a year.

The website said they buy locally whenever possible, but I'm sceptical, of course. It would be interesting to find out who is behind this "non-profit" website.

There is no free [s]lunch[/s] rice.

You divided by the reciprocal of the conversion factor, I come up with 347,249 lb, just over $83k at that rate. That makes a lot more sense, as $12k would be less than the cost of shipping.

Maybe its just me... but I find the freerice.com concept kind of grotesque. Well to do people in wealthy nations get to think not only about how great they are for helping out some starving person in the 3rd world, but also get to believe that the greater their vocabulary skills, the more of a do-gooder they can be... You poor, starving people can have food, but only if I get to feel as smug as possible about what a great person I am.

Meanwhile, rather than helping people in the 3rd world be self-sufficient, they're just apparently given free rice (not even sure that they will end up with the rice).

So the end result is that people in 3rd world nations are encouraged to increase their already unsustainable populations, but receive no useful skills, and wealthy, educated people in the developed world make a serious ecological problem worse. The only real benefit of freerice.com being to make the person answering the questions feel good about themselves.

I'm owning everyone.

They should have an account option so you can save your grains allowing you to progress on other computers. And then they could make a high scores board. :D

I stopped at 3000 grains, highest score 50, my score was wavering between 45-48, I've never seen a lot of those words before, but my guessing is good.

What, does that game just go on forever? I'd get up near 50 overall, and miss a few then it starts throwing me slow balls, lol then back up into the stuff that Latin knowledge doesn't help with. Not that I know Latin, just read a lot of scientific stuff and some seems to have soaked in.

Good news out of Asia, rice running low

Postby I_Like_Plants » Thu 14 Feb 2008, 17:18:03

Thank Odin it's about time!

Time to import lots of rice to 'em with some sort of birth control agent on it, maybe some virus, anything.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TireFire', 'S')eems like you're talking about poisoining hundreds of million of people, maybe even murdering them.

This does not seem seem to be a very humane thing to do.

My thoughts exactly. I do wonder about the mental health of some posters on here.
