My Super Walmart's frozen food section has sensors so the lights turn on and off depending on if people are in the isle. Kind of good idea when you multiply it by all the SW stores. I'm guessing up here they could turn the heat down and save way more energy.
lawns should be outlawed.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('joeltrout', 'S')ounds like a crime spree waiting to happen.

Absolutely. The darker it is, the more dangerous. We'll probably see those lights come back on after a while.

CO2 reducing energy saving methods that should have been employed years ago and are pretty sensible=Olduvai cliff?
Thats quite a leap of reasoning...

Would be super if street lights were turned off. Imagine seeing the stars in a black sky like the original Indians did hundreds of years ago. Of course, they'll never stay off all night.

Sounds like an improvement to me. I hate street lights anyway. Then again, I would never willingly live in a place where you had to worry about being mugged every time you walk around in the dark. Where I live, I have to worry about being eaten in the dark, but not so much about being mugged.

Lights meant for cars are one thing, lights for pedestrians another. Lights over roadways are usually a lot stronger so you save more by turning them off. Cars have their own built in lights.

Lights for pedestrians make more sense.

nocar is completely right. But on the other hand they switch it out after midnight. Maybe they should make a difference between weekdays and weekends?
Here in Australia it's just crazy. Brisbane city council hasn't realized yet that all cars have lights. So major roads are really lit up.

so this measurement hasn't anything to do with Mr. Olduvai, it only makes sense, they want to hit the margins of CO2 reduction, and the nice thing is they're saving money as well.

(this wouldn't be that bad in the US having a bit of money left over for the old and poor?)

(semi - off topic)

Ever since I was a kid, I've had a strange relationship with streetlights that persists until today... I'll be walking down the sidewalk at night, and a random streetlight will turn itself off when I get within about twenty or thirty feet of it, or if it happens to be off, it will turn itself on. This still happens at least twice a week. Am I the only one? Is this just a string of hundreds of coincidences? It happens in any circumstance, any time past sunset, even in different cities. I dunno.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('SheikYarbhouti', '(') Is this just a string of hundreds of coincidences?

Probably. How many times do you walk near a streetlight and it doesn't react? A bunch, I bet. What you're doing is counting hits and ignoring misses.

Or it could be The Law of Attraction at work.
