$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ludi', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('SheikYarbhouti', '(') Is this just a string of hundreds of coincidences?

Probably. How many times do you walk near a streetlight and it doesn't react? A bunch, I bet. What you're doing is counting hits and ignoring misses.

Perhaps. It just seems like a strange thing to have happen over and over and over when I get within a certain range, and at least half the time the light goes back to its previous setting when I get out of range.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ludi', 'O')r it could be The Law of Attraction at work.

You guys should be a little slower to buy into the hype.

Most power plants have to keep running and generate at least at minimum capacity at night or shut down generators. Shutting down means long re-start times, and is inefficient and wasteful in itself, and drives up costs. The cheapest power is the power being used in the midnight hours, and unless there are sufficient uses drawing on the power that must be generated anyway, it simply goes to waste. That waste then drives up daytime rates to cover the costs.

In other words, while the excuse "to save money" may be legitimate given various city budgets, the environmental argument is bullshit put out there to justify their actions.

Watch what happens next as their crimes stats go up...wonder if they'll be saving any money on increased police patrols, property damage and theft, court time, etc., that will come as a result?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Hawkcreek', 'I') think it is better to light just what you need to see, rather than the whole sky.

The amateur astronomers among us certainly appreciate that point of view! Light pollution sucks. I prefer to have intact night vision for safety. I think sometimes lights deter criminals, but other times they simply make it easier for them to case your place.

Right you are Shannymara; I'm one of those amateur astronomers. To get skies dark enough to see the Milky Way (which is really the disk of our galaxy seen edge wise) I have to drive about 120 from where I live in Orange County California to an observing site near Landers, California in the Mojave desert.

An article in an Astronomy publication I came across stated that in the United States now, only 1 in 6 people have ever seen the Milky Way. This is one of only a few silver linings P.O. offers, in the coming future, without artificial lighting people will once again be able to view the incredible beauty of a clear dark sky covered in stars from where ever they live.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smallpoxgirl', 'S')ounds like an improvement to me. I hate street lights anyway. Then again, I would never willingly live in a place where you had to worry about being mugged every time you walk around in the dark. Where I live, I have to worry about being eaten in the dark, but not so much about being mugged.

 - Sounds like where I am. Did you know that dogs will generally back way off when they smell a cougar? Damn chicken shits. There I am trying to verify the cougar has left the area and the dogs are trailing 30 feet back and glancing at the house ready to run. Some help  . A friend of mine in Colorado had a similar problem. Only they had a trench type latrine (well away from the house) and you always had to be on the lookout for cougar when using it. Made for some significant pucker factor at night especially. Her rotts wanted nothing to do with cougars and would stay a safe distance back towards the house.

I would suggest Burnham’s Celestial Handbook (3 volumes). A little dated (1975), but nothing comes close to it in a one source collection of information about what is up there to observe.

And oh yes, H. A. Rey, the guy who wrote the "Curious George" books we all read as youngsters, also wrote what I consider the best book on how to find and recognize the constellations. It's called "The Stars, A New Way To See Them". It organizes the patterns to look like what the constellation is suppose to portray, and in doing so I believe uncovered them as the ancients conceived them
