Humility

Postby wisconsin_cur » Sun 10 Feb 2008, 00:11:51

From another thread:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('timbo', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PopeGideon', '.')..This is really bad news for Joe Six Pack because it means that the world is now ready to start pricing things in Euros, and while that works for the Europeans, it will be death to JSP because his standard of living is going to plummet along with the dollar.

And the irony of it is it serves the poor stupid fool right.

emphasis mine.

Now when I was little my dad taught me a lot of things. Some very practical. A few marginally illegal. Most of it useful. Among the most useful was this advice.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Papa_cur', '
')Son, it doesn't matter how smart you are, how fast you are or how strong you are, there is always someone smarter, faster and stronger. Ask yourself when you use your smarts or your speed or your strength, "Is this guy smarter? faster? stronger? I'll tell you son, you can't always tell by looking at a person" Always use your smarts, speed and strength doing things that you wouldn't mind someone else doing or else someday you'll find them doing it to you.

So perhaps before we go off on "the poor stupid fools" and talk about how it serves them right, we should consider compassion or humility. If they are a poor stupid fool, how can it serve them right? They are stupid fools. What does a little compassion cost? Only your self-righteousness and that, to me, seems like a small price to pay. Some would even say that the giver of compassion gets the better side of the deal.

May the compassion you show to others be the compassion that is shown to you,

Pretty sure in the future people will be more community minded, life will probably be better for some. After getting acquainted with a relative of mine who has had a unfortunate life you begin to realize why helping those "less fortunate" doesn't always work out. Help them all you want and they spit in your face and demand more. Some people have to hit rock bottom before they try to improve themselves. If even then they don't then let them die.

"Always use your smarts, speed and strength doing things that you wouldn't mind someone else doing or else someday you'll find them doing it to you."

Not sure if I understand this. I don't like gardening much so id prefer someone else to do it but watch out if you don't start gardening for them, they'll garden you!! 8O

Compassion is not the same thing as doing something for them and neither, for that matter, is humility. It is a matter of sayig, "but by the grace of God there go I."

There is little we can do, even if we were willing. It doesn't mean that we need to being saying "Stupid little bastards are getting what they deserve!"

I'd like to take this one step further. The line between stupidity and genius is both very thin, very hard to find and a matter of perspective.

I have a friend who most people consider nice but not a very smart person. In fact her parents nicknamed her "Spacey". I kid you not. However, Spacey does have a creative genius. She can take a bunch of flowers, or cut up paper and make the most beautiful works of art.

There are something like 7 DIFFERENT geniuses. Just cause some of us have IQ's of 138 doesn't mean we are smart in everything and doesn't mean we should write off certain people just cause they aren't our kind of people or we haven't had the time to get our heads out of our own asses to recognize something of value in others.

Compassion? I like papa-cur's take on it all and will be the first to admit that I am not the most compassionate person here. but once in a while I like to stop and smell other peoples roses and see whats on their side of the fence. If nothing else, I ain't bored doing it.

Wisconsin cur, well done. Compassion to our 'fellow man' has gone out of vogue lately, and that's a shame. It's about time someone made a post like this. A little compassion costs no one anything, and rewards the giver and receiver with a feeling of something important.

Mamapello used to tell me this exact same thing. It seems quite a bit different than what the kids today are told. She would also say that everyone had something they could teach another or that you could learn something from anybody.

This is a libertarian vs. liberal battle. The libertarian says "government should stay out of people's business, and if someone goes down hard, they had it coming to them for their poor decisions." The liberal says "not everyone is as smart and rich as you, and if someone goes down hard we should help because no one deserves to die in the gutter."

Luckily, fMRIs are now showing us that the liberals were closer to being right. Hard times tend to bring out more liberal tendencies too. Who knows, maybe people will rediscover that Jesus was a liberal.

The real irony is that many of the people who would now say "poor stupid fools" are libertarians who will change their stripes when it happens to them.

For the record liberals have their own choices of who they like to call "poor stupid fools." I believe it was waylong Jennings who said that "everyone needs someone to look down on." It was "liberals" after all who ostracized the "poor stupid fools" who fought in Vietnam.

Compassion is a lesson that we all can learn, it is not limited to political affiliation or philosophy.

Thank you, however, for the affirmation.
