Davep you are damned lucky being in France, if I had a million dollars I'd be there too. Unfortunately like almost all US Empire subjects, I'm an economic prisoner here.

Anyway, to the laptop ..... it's very very good to practice on other stuff first. You can even order soldering training kits on-line, or, you can just get someone who's made all the mistakes and got them out of their system, to do it.

There are a lot of Mac tinkerers out there and macs are well made, thank goodness for that.

1. goto a small computer store.
2. explain you want some old circuit boards to practice soldering on
3. Take boards home
4. solder a lot
5 fix your computer.
I would buy a SMALL cheap soldering tool ($2.99

use a file and file the tip to a sharp point
put a touch of solder un it until it surns silver.

then try it wih magnifying glass.

The title got me. I thought that you were incredibly brave and had some internet version of "Where there is no surgeon" and was going to try out your hand for when the hospitals close.

I like the way computers have become so much part of our lives that we refer to then as a living creature, eg "surgery" instead of "repair"
