$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'I') will be performing this procedure tonight:

Please wish me luck.

Have you soldered stuff on circuit boards before? There's quite a knack to it. You may want to practice on something else first if you don't want to ruin the connector...

I had a fairly abrupt initiation into the arts of electronic engineering. I got a job with Philips in France many moons ago, ostensibly to do some software stuff. I got there and discovered I was meant to be repairing lasers on their production line (20km of conveyors). The lasers were barcode readers that were stripped out of the point of sale units and ruggedised.

Having shat myself, I went to the library and learnt what I could. After three months I was actually quite proficient at diagnosing problems and repairing the buggers.

Then the bastids told me that they just gave me the job because they knew there was a position opening up for me in software that required good English. I nearly throttled the bloke. Still, I learnt a lot I suppose.

Davep you are damned lucky being in France, if I had a million dollars I'd be there too. Unfortunately like almost all US Empire subjects, I'm an economic prisoner here.

Anyway, to the laptop ..... it's very very good to practice on other stuff first. You can even order soldering training kits on-line, or, you can just get someone who's made all the mistakes and got them out of their system, to do it. 8)

There are a lot of Mac tinkerers out there and macs are well made, thank goodness for that.

1. goto a small computer store.
2. explain you want some old circuit boards to practice soldering on
3. Take boards home
4. solder a lot
5 fix your computer.
I would buy a SMALL cheap soldering tool ($2.99

use a file and file the tip to a sharp point
put a touch of solder un it until it surns silver.

then try it wih magnifying glass.

Your local independent Mac shop or a local seller on Craig's List will treat you FAR better than scambay.

The title got me. I thought that you were incredibly brave and had some internet version of "Where there is no surgeon" and was going to try out your hand for when the hospitals close.

I like the way computers have become so much part of our lives that we refer to then as a living creature, eg "surgery" instead of "repair"
We should teach our children the 4-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejoice.
